Tom Mason, who does a bunch of work for MERCS and other companies is looking to expand on his line of miniatures:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1470153821/effigy-miniatures-havoc-protocol-sci-fi-miniatures/?ref=kicktraq

Needs $5K for initial funding, and there is $1171 in the kiddy already. There are two additional stretch goals which are already in the que for after the initial goal is met.

If the new figures are sized like the existing ones - the three girls measure to be around 32 mm to the tops of their hair and are more realistically proportioned than some other companies...

You can see his workbench blog here:

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Are these guys part of the MERC game?

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

These belong to a separate game setting...but I suppose you could use them in MERCS, Sedition Wars or Infinity.

For some reason these appeal to me...maybe because they're a smaller company.

Here are painted samples from their site (these are already available):

I would maybe think about pledging if the sculpts were further along than they are atm. There is just not enough progress for me to judge if the final product is going to be something I was interested in. Not sure why the sculptor didn't wait till they were finished before putting them up, even if they just did a single model it would interest me much more. As it is I will probably give this one a miss...

The example minis shown look pretty interesting - a different style to a lot of what I support - might be time to branch out.

The fact it's a pretty fledgling company is interesting too.

I'm thinking that he (Tom) will update the WIP pictures as the KS progresses but I like his previous work so I'll take the leap...but you're right, one finished figure would help the cause. However, I'm approaching this KS a little differently than Dreadball or SW. In those I'm expecting a ton of minis, but with this one I'm just looking to help a one man company get a leg up...getting the nice figures in this case is a bonus.

I like it.

But it is his second KS already. He shoulda know by now how you lay out the honey. I think Bombshell Babes showed pretty well what you can do with just sketches and artwork and not actually showing any of the miniatures.

I think one of the things which Bombshells is showing (compared to this and the one by RBG) is that women, especially attractive and revealing women sell 5 to 1 over regular miniatures (contrary to what all the contrarians seem to harp about regarding objectification and all that).

As I understand it though, he works a day job and does a fair amount of contract sculpting as well - but I would assume that in the next day or three he will have a completed figure or two for the base package and hopefully have a bit more to show for the girls and future goals.

One of the reasons I included the link to his workbench site above though was to show that he had the sculpting chops to pull things off in general. Though, I do agree in principle that it might have been better off to go through and have a larger collection of completed or nearly complete sculpts to slip in (and to schedule time to take care of the KS campaign too). Kids, work and life in general often get in the way of that sort of thing though for these smaller shops - but hopefully the updates start coming to keep things moving in the right direction. The concept looks to be a good fit for other not-so grim dark sci-fi settings.

Thanks for posting this KS Sean...I don't think it would have ever shown up on my radar. Hoping for updates too...I'd like to at least get to the first goal.

I went ahead and ordered the three girls from his site yesterday...they'll fit nicely with some Hasselfree minis I already have.

Reaper has also commented that they've done experiments showing nudes sell better: from reaper Bryan

"But we have done some tests. Conversions on the same figure, and released under different part numbers and names have shown that an immodest figure will outsell a more modest version of the same exact figure. A topless version will sell a LOT more, and full nudity will sell even more. "

and that's from a company that releases enough stuff to actually do the comparisons

This is certainly a factor. But not the only one.

I was simply pointing out that the Bombshell Kickstarter does not show a single sculpt of the miniatures coming from the Kickstarter (though it shows off old/other sculpts by Patrick Keith). But in tying together old sculpts and sketches/artwork of what is presumed to be coming, its presentation is top-notch.

And in this sense, I think Tom Mason's KS could learn from Bombshell, even if he doesn't have that many sculpts yet (given that he has one, that is already more than Bombshell has). Show off more of his old work for MERCS, etc.. and more sketches, drawings and ideas for what he wants to do with Havoc to create a better "picture" for the visitor of what will be the product coming from this.

Hell, I need this thread to see the sci-fi girls that came from his first Kickstarter. Stuff like that should be in the current one to show people what his work is like.

Update to reflect the first completed Trooper Green:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1470153821/effigy-miniatures-havoc-protocol-sci-fi-miniatures/posts/309976

He also is doing free worldwide shipping on the existing figures for orders over $19.99 (which would be the 3 girl pack) with the offer code: KICKSTARTER

I wondered why he refunded my shipping costs, then I saw the update. Great guy.

Sculpt looks great now it is finished. Seems to have more realism than his last sculpts which I like though I would need to have an idea of the exact scale of them before I jump in!

These will be cast in metal correct? Seems that the rest of his minis (barring the special edition bits) are.

The angles of the girls make them look much more...skinny I guess...than they actually are:

Larger 360 images of the 3 girls from the same style:

http://www.effigyminis.com/Kickstarter/Sci-fi-Hacker_Painted.jpg

http://www.effigyminis.com/Kickstarter/Sci-fi-Pilot_Painted.jpg

http://www.effigyminis.com/Kickstarter/Sci-fi-Recon_Painted.jpg

Although you don't often see girls with those proportions walking around in the mall nowadays - they are realistic (by and large).

They will be cast in metal, though I am not too sure on the exact "scale". The previous 3 girls are all about 32 mm to the tops of their heads. Managed to find a shot of them next to a ruler so as to avoid digging out a camera and doing my own:

http://news.wargamesforum.it/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/effigy_miniatures_pilot_recon_hacker_review2.jpg

And another to make sure their booty is in scale.

http://news.wargamesforum.it/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/effigy_miniatures_pilot_recon_hacker_review3.jpg

Seems as though my memory is slipping some in my old age...as that ruler seems to indicate them being about 34mm to the tops of their heads.

Now - if the guys are sculpted to be a little taller or not...don't know. Hopefully that proves helpful though.

Well thanks for the very informative reply! You are right, the angle of the females made them seem much shorter than they actually were.

Might as well go for a set of these guys then. Now I have seen the finished sculpt I am confident this will be a great little project!

Hey Everyone, Tom here.

First a big thanks to Sean O'Brien for posting a link to the project on Dakka Dakka. I've enjoyed reading the discussion and seeing everyone's comments. (I just had to use one of those cool emoticons!)

To answer some of your questions. All of these miniatures will be cast in pewter. 32mm scale is the rough size of the miniatures to the eye when I build an armature of the character standing up straight (with some variation between male and female). So the miniatures fit right in with Infinity but aren't quite as large as MERCS. The first trooper will be cooked tonight so I'll take some photos of the mini next to a ruler and with one of the sci-fi girls for everyone to see.

Yes, Patrick's done a great job with his Kickstarter and I can definitely see ways to improve my own. The suggestion to show some of my other work is especially good. There will also be more concept art going up soon and as well as some new reward types. Just waiting to hear back from a few artists.

Thanks again guys!

Thanks coyotius!

Alright guys, here's a size reference image for the troopers:

Since I tend to poke around on the back sides of websites a bit - figured I would throw this out there really quick...hopefully Tom won't mind:

And of course, since I don't recall it being posted already:

I would guess that they are part of the 3rd update...but that is listed as backer only...and I forgot the password for the account I used to back it with, so...can't say for certain.

If I could make one suggestion, I would probably say switch either the heavy or the sniper to a girl (probably the sniper...though that is just keeping in line with the trope more then preference). Also, although it can be hard to say from line drawings...is the heavy intended to be larger? I would hope so (again - the trope).

I hope Tom steps up the tempo of his updates as I think he's losing interest on the part of some pledgers. There's still 2 plus weeks to go but now is the time to act.

New update:

"Founders" are available as extras and two NEW female troopers (not to be confused with the three "specialists") are now included in the base Havoc Squad.

These two females were originally the 10K stretch goal but now replace two males in the Havoc Squad.

To sum up, the Havoc Squad is a leader, drone, two male troopers and two female troopers.

Also, updated 10K, 15K and 20K goals.

10K (Heavy Support):

15K (Sniper):

20K (Council Liason or "Lieutenant"):

Still have a good 15 days left to go - so it should manage to get the first goal down for the basic team.

I like the new manner in which it is being dealt with though, and think it is probably more along the way that it should have started out.

They scale well with Infinity figures as well, and the civvies which are available from Antenociti's Workshop should look good with the two Founder's which were added to the mix.

Funds are (really) tight right now, but I'll try to scrape together the cash for at least a full squad, hopefully with the founders added on. Not to sound stupid, but the money doesn't come out of your account until the kickstarter ends, correct?

New update with proposed drone revision:

The drone has created quite a stir and the consensus seems to be that it looks like some sort of mechanical fowl. I've read over several suggestions on how to revise the design and come up with a rough comp.

Check it out and let me know what you think.
