Ok, is 40K losing some of its appeal because of the lack of a story line - 20 years with no advancement is kind of boring and the fluff that they have been coming out with seems not to have a direction and just flailing about. I have played various armies since 1st Edition. Right now 40K seems on a down hill slide. What does everybody think?

Eastern Frontier Exploratores
224th Astra Legion (main army)
628th Praetorian Guard Cohort (wife's army)
827th Auxilia Cohort (ad mech fun)
825th Foderati Cohort (in the beginning army)
1212th Foederati Cohort - Jokaero (cause I like apes with guns)

40k is and always has been a setting, not a story. I've been playing almost as long as you have and it hasn't lost any appeal to me.

Major story advancement is going to be very tricky to pull off without potentially stepping on a lot of toes.

A major advancement would probably require the destruction or radical change of one of the less populated races/armies such as Eldar, Tau, Necrons, or one of the main Chaos or Loyalist marine chapters, which is going to piss alot of players off. Can you imagine how pissed off Space Wolves players would be if GW decided to go ahead and have the Imperium declare them Excommunicate Traitoris?

The other form of major advancement is special character development, but that typically only impacts one army and more often than not, doesn't really advance things much in the grand scheme of things. Eldrad died and Cadia pretty much fell in the Eye of Terror campaign, but it remains to be seen if there will be any development with the backstory for Eldar or Imperial Guard (or Chaos for that matter). Seeing as how Eldrad died in 3rd edition, and the 4th edition codex still had him featured, so its unlikely there will be any changes.

I personally hope they bring the campaigns back with book releases like they did in 3rd edition. That was one of the better ways to advance the story in small increments without upsetting the overall setting.

Isn't there a thread on this already?

The whole point of the setting is to take it to a place where everything is at the edge and everyone has a reason to fight. If it actually went forward, certain armies/races/characters might be made invalid (although Eldrad's dead but still available, so who knows) and the balance of the setting would be upset. Personally I'd like to see another global campaign that leads to the death of a character or breaking of a chapter or something like that though. Even if that character is still usable in-game (once again, a la Eldrad) it would be a nice nod of continuity.

I think they could progress the setting and just have legacy characters, or even successor characters. Same gear but can use the specal character as the old one, or the new one in games. Just keep the rules the same for both. Could even use it as a way to sell a separate model :p

I do not think the game is losing appeal with the lack of advancement, but I sure as anything know I mostly ignore the lore now. Chaos and the horus heresy got me into the lore 10+ years ago. But now I don't want to here anything about it, all just boring

Warhammer 40K has story lines?

Here I thought it was a tabletop game.

You should read up on the Orks, they're the best, forget the rest. I hear their mind explodes when they fight Blood Angels, "They're standing still! BUT THEY'RE MOVING SO FAST!!"(translated for your convenience).

I know you're being sarcastic.

The background is there to create a setting to explain why your toy soldiers are attacking the other guys.

The problem is as soon as something changes from its static state you have to declare a winner, does the 13th black crusade finally break clear and swamp the imperium?

Do the swarms of the tyranids eat all life in the galaxy?

Do the orcs finally unite and smother the galaxy in green?

Does the emperor die and get resurrected heralding a new age as he calls his loyal sons back and finally wins the galaxy for humanity.

On and On you can go, the whole point is your fighting to influence the outcome, but if GW ever declared a winner all the other races would rage.

You don't have to declare a winner, if nothing by advancing the fluff, what they do is allow for fighting for a reason, not just fighting for fightings sake.

well if they just made the models a little bit cheaper to buy im sure more people would get into it ,making them cheaper would increase intrest and quite frankly we would all buy more directly from them instead of buying used, its not like their barely scraping by as a company they make about a 1000% profit on those little pieces of plastic they sell..... and if you want storyline read more BL novels
