Power axes are a good idea, as with a pistol you still get an extra attack, which I like having 5 on a charge.

Yeah pretty good, just trying to remember the exact wording on Unwieldy, doesn't it reduce Init 1 like a PF.

If so it's a bit of call on PF vs Power Axe, with Double Toughness Instant Death/ Anti-Vehicle /Anti-MC /sacrifice Initiative or Sacrafice initiative and do AP2 normal Power Weapon attacks.

It is Unwieldly, so you go at I1, but you still get bonus attacks. I'd rather have +1 attack than s8 most of the time. Give a Sargeant the Powerfist, if you must bring one.

Something that's a bit more expensive, but effective, would be powerfist & lightningclaw combo. They're both specialist weapons, so get +1 attack from eachother, you choose which to attack with depending on the situations, fist has high strength and Ap2 while claw gets to reroll wounds. That would be my personal pick, but I'm known for high points cost per figure, most people prefer the opposite.

What you want and what you gave us to work with, aren't going to happen. You can't really develop a truly unique miniature by simply kit bashing, that said you can still have very nice looking models through simply kit bashing.

Best suggestion is to simply get the kits you are looking at using, or the kits that you have and then using some blu-tac, tac together some different loadouts and different positions and see what you like, and what you think looks good.

Not quite true. It is just going to require some serious looking for bitz. The trick I found was, no surprise, to search ebay. Not for recent bitz, but for people finally letting go of old RT thru 2e models. The basic armor on some of those units was incredible looking. I used one to bash out a champion and am working on a 1990 body to bash out a Master of the Forge. If the base tab of the model had not been stamped GW 1990 Spacemarine, I would never have though it was a GW Space Marine.

Aha, you took my idea and made it better, or at least more expensive! I like that, Powerfist/Lightning Claw combo, why take 2 lightning claws when you can do that? I would make sure first they don't need to be the same specialist weapon to work like that.

No doesn't have to be the same weapon, both weapons have to have the specialist weapon rule, that's the thing. So you won't get an extra attack with a fist and pistol, nor fist and power weapon, but you will from fist and lightning claw. Or hammer and claw for that matter, or any combination of specialist weapons.

I must do this now. It's a darn shame my captain has a magnetized Powerfist, and Lightning Claw ... albeit both for the same hand. Time to make another.

Hold on it might be specialist, but it has to be the same Weapon doesn't it?

@Johnno can you reference the exact rule you are using.

He's right. Page 42. It's clearly stated that both weapons need Specialist. It used to be required that it was the same weapon in 5th.

It's an ugly planet. A bug planet.
