Plummeting Black Templar Thunderhawk Pilot

Hi Guys,
I was browsing on the KR website today, and their cases look pretty good. The problem is that i'm not actually sure of a few things, which I was hoping some KR customers could possibly help me out with.
Based on the size of the army I want to store, I think I want to go for a Quad case. Now from the pictures, it looks like I can store 4 "cardboard boxes" inside this. What can I store inside each cardboard box? Two sections of foam? How deep are these foam sections?
Also, in the metal cases, are there places to store books/dice/templates etc? or would i need to find something else to store these?
Thanks in advance!
Liam

You can store 1 KRU in each case; a KRU is 4 inches of foam, with room for two trays next to each other. In other words, you could potentially fit 8 trays, one inch deep, of 25 dudes a piece. As much as I love KR's products, I do admit their website is a bit crappy and hard to navigate. Send them an email and tell them what you have and they'll hook you up with the right case

The foam can be various thicknesses depending on what you're storing in there. The infantry trays fit either three or four layers deep in each case depending on the thickness of the trays - I us e the 1/4 deep trays for guard models and 1/3rd deep for marines and terminators.
It's worth the extra bit of money for the custom cut trays if you have vehicles, etc. It makes a huge difference to fitting everything in without breaking stuff. I have 5 cases now and that does for all my marines plus some of my guard. I have the cloth double case and the double backpack. If you ever take any of your models to games, I'd recommend getting two double case rather than 1 quad case, the quad case will be very large! I find that for 2000pt games or less, two cases will usually carry everything I want to bring. I used to use the 'kaiser' double case if I was walking, or the backpack if I was cycling, but the backpack has more pockets for dice/books etc so I just tend to use that now. Not sure what the situation is for the metal cases but you could easily fit a codex or two and the mini rulebook in between the foam layers.

Well the whole army I have is pretty heavily converted - I looked at battlefoam, but the case i wanted to order won't be in stock again for a while. The cases I was looking at were Quads - Kaiser and Alluminium. Even if the boxes are bigger, I think i'd still prefer to take a Quad, as it will be much easier to transport for me.
Could I get Dice/TapeMeasure/Codexes inside the alluminium one? The Zip one looked much better for this.

One thought is if you are getting the custom trays, make one of them pluck foam and use that space for accessories. Or if you are, for example, getting one of the trays cut to hold two land raiders, and you only have one, that space could be used for dice etc. You give up valuable mini space, but have the connivence of everything fitting in the box.
I can only assume that there should be enough give in the foam to slip a codex in there. They are not that thick, and KR bills themselves as soft foam. Can't speak from personal experience though. I've looked into picking up a case from them a few times, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Their website is so terribad i gave up and made some foam and a case of my own.
From what I've seen at my local club, their isnt much room left in the cardboard cases once they are filled up with foam. I would go for something like the Kaiser4 Transport bag (4 cardboard containers of foam). It has plenty of pockets on the outside for dice, books, rulers etc.
Have you thought about getting the Pack system from Battlefoam? You can buy a pack 432, and extra Pack Plus cases that zip together to make it bigger.

Dude, send them an email and tell them exactly what you are trying to store, they will do the rest. I bought two kr cases and i could not have been happier with both price and performance.

The cardboard KR cases are roughly the size of the AoBR and Dark Vengeance starter boxes. Maybe not as long, but about as wide and deep.
So, a quad case is going to be huge. If that's fine with you, go for it.
I got the double backpack, and it sticks out a fair bit. It does carry all my codices, (small) rules and templates in the front, and dice and tape measures in the side pockets.
The double aluminium case carries a lot of foam, but is awkward to get at the trays in the bottom. Put the big stuff there, like custom drop pod trays, or tanks.
I've not tried it with the shoulder-strap, but I've trusted the handle for short trips. I'll get a strap to make sure the catches don't pop open sometime.
For info, the double alu case holds:
2x drop pods,
8x rhinos,
2 half-width troop trays,
2 full-width troop trays.
I've not filled it yet, as I keep my Terms and LR in a seperate cardboard case.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I remeasured, and I can actually fit all I need into a Triple Kaiser3 case, which will also be useful for transporting books and templates etc. SO hopefully I should be all good to go now! I'll let you know when it arrives in a couple of days (might even put up some photos of the army if anyone is interested).

Hey guys! Here are some snaps of the foam! I'm also going to upload pictures of the army in a separate thread (i'll post the link here too when i've uploaded them.
The foam is absolutely brilliant! I can fit everything that I need into it, and it even fits all my really customised stuff! Automatically Appended Next Post: I've now got all the models in the army on display in a new thread!

Ive been looking for a cheap custom case company for a while now. Those cardboard cases look quite good. Can anyone comment on exactly how good they are? I only really need them for storage as I dont travel to game much. Their website is quite bad I agree. I think Ill just email them all the models I want to fit in there and just get a quote directly from them.

The card cases are excellent. I have 5 and am planning to get more.
They are a nice size, hold their shape and stack well with tons of stuff in them.
I took two in a backpack to a tournamnet yeaterday as i have done many times before. no worries at all. I have actually stopped using my aluminium case in favour of them.

I have a double aluminum locking case. It's amazing, and I love the flexibility of the system (Meaning you can mix and match the hell out of it for a very low cost).
I have around 150 points of Legion (Mainly heavy warbeasts), and it fits everything. Get it. You won't regret it!

Exactly the same for me. I've got nothing against their foam, but they need to sort out their website. The store area is based on the idea that you know how their tray/box/case system works, but there's nothing there to help a new customer. When the usual suggestion is 'email them with what you have and they'll suggest a set of stuff', you know there's serious issues with their online catalogue.

The KR foam conforms to models much better than the harder BattleFoam stuff.
Check out the links on at the bottom of the KR homepage, they are quite useful. The tray system is pretty cool once you figure it out...but man is it confusing at first.
Here are some PDFs they made to help deciding what is best for your army:

In Battlefoams semi rigid trays, they have a little wiggle room, but not enough to move and break, and have the added bonus that they don't get stuck.

Yes, that is true. Sharp bits can poke through the foam too. Depends on if you prefer the snug fit or having wiggle room.

Which is odd as KR comes I a selection of sizes and obviously custom cuts. The faults you point out are true for both type of foam; if you jam your models in they will catch on whatever you have jammed it in.
BR and their hard foam is no more unsuitable for transporting minis than KR and thsir soft foam.
But in the world of my "toy is better than your toy" internet wargaming I'm sure it makes sense to some, but let's not go down that OT route again shall we?

Hey guys (apologies for the major thread necro - but it's on topic).
I'm once again considering going to KR for my custom foam needs - this time i'm considering getting an aluminium triple case. Can anyone tell me if (when the lid closes) there is room for things like dice, codexes templates or anything like that? The reason i'm considering this one over the Kaiser is because I can store it easier in my flat.
Advice appreciated!

I'm surprised no-one's locked this for major necro (as mentioned).
But, to answer the question, there's no real amound of room in an alu case. There are no pockets.
If you put dice and stuff (see KR's own range) in the foam slots in place of models, you can also probably squeeze in a DV 40k rulebook or a softback codex in the top.
But, if you leave out foam, and you can fit anything....
