I have been looking at getting an airbrush to help paint my models and was wondering if anyone had recommendations for a good decently priced airbrush.

stay away from the cheap 30$ propellent kits, as for basics, you can buy a starter kit that as everything at once. or piece it out over time, either for a good setup is pricy. you need an airbrush, hose, compresser, moister trap, regulator. those are the bare bones basics for a setup i have. You can have some compressors witha built in tank, those are Very nice to work with try to go to dual stage brush, easier to learn and clean( for me) there are a lot of good brands out there. sometimes you get lucky at local pawn shops.I use an Iwata Hp-A. small resevoir, but works really well for my uses, has a .2mm needle.

It's basically a knock-off of an Iwata brush, but very well made, and an absolute steal at $30 USD. Recently got it and it works like a charm. Also see the Airbrush Tactica thread:

Make sure you get a double action and if you want less hassle get a gravity fed, the one with the cup on top. Michel’s has coupons for 50% off any one item all the time so you can grab a very nice one for around sixty bucks and as long as you keep it cleaned out it will last forever

I bought one of these about 6 months back and I now use it instead of my Iwata.

They are totally worth the money.

Define decently priced?

What are you looking to do with it? Just basecoat? Or are you looking for pencil line precision?

Just a follow up anyone know a good compressor to go with it, trying to this on a college students budget but I can spend a little bit.

Can you use GW paints with an airbrush or do I need special paints?

You can use gw paints. Just recommend using reaper paints flow improver and paint reducer. Or a paint retarder, it makes the paint dry slower so you get less dry tip on the airbrush. Which will prolly happen a few times. The flow improver is a personal choice. Works great for me. For compressers you he what you pay for. Better comps work better longer without pressure drop and overheating, or putting excessive moister in the tank( if it has one) moisture happens when compressing air. So moisture trap is handy to prevent it from ending up in your paint and splattering your work

Hey there.
Do some searching...this question gets asked about twice a month or so - so you can find a TON of information which this particualr thread might miss.

Here is my summary:

Get a cheap dual action, gravity feed is better, but siphon feed is fine for beginning. Get a cheap air compressor.
The harbor freight starter kit is a great bang for the buck.

Practice, practice then practice some more.

Welcome to a new and exciting world ....they are just awesome!
