Subject: Elven Blades and Shield

Storming Storm Guardian

I recently noticed that Elf Captains cannot take spears.
Should I take a Shield on my Captains, or just stick with the blade?

Take both if you can. Although generally the shield will be best for defense and you can always pile a 2-hander in on your captains fights for the plus one. But the blade can be used 1 or 2handed so you can take with a shield.

Keep in mind if you take a shield you cannot two-hand with your elf blade unless you discard it (and its +1 def) later in the game.

So, is the +1 Defence better, or is the two-hand option just to useful to let go of?
I can imagine it would be against trolls and the like... but little use if you're against other stuff... Am I right?

I'd never use a captain with two handed attacks. It is too many points for an elven captain to lose combat because he wants a plus one to wound. You effectively waste 10pts because you can't make use of his fight 6 properly.
So to cap it, shield and sword, single hand only!....... IMHO of course

I only go 2-Handed if I've got a banner in range, and even then rarely.
I've adopted this since I started using banners and had a game where Saruman cracked lots of heavy armored Elves.

Do keep in mind now it's not a waste as now he can feint with the sword if the opponent's fight value is higher than his, this is super helpful for people such as gondorians. re-rolls of 1's can come a lot more handy than you might think.
