the base was probably shadow grey or space wolves grey but I cant remember for sure

or maybe the colours from other model paint lines to get the similar look would help too

Unfortunately those colors as we know them don't exist anymore, at least not from GW. Even GW's Space Wolves Grey in the 90s is different than their Space Wolves Grey in the 2000s, which is different than Fenris Grey or The Fang which we have now. You'll just have to look for a baby blue you;re happy with.

Yeah, the original scheme was GW's Blue-Grey (which I think later became Shadow Grey) as a base layer, with Space Wolves grey over the top.

No idea what that translates to in GW's new Trademarked-and-confusingly-named-for convenience range, as I stopped buying GW paints when they decided to change all of their colours yet again..

Eavy metal used shadow grey as a base, followed by a 50 50 mix of shadow grey and spacewolf grey followed by spacewolf grey as highlights

The first image looks like the old Shadow grey (I don't know if that colour still exists in the new range). With fine "edge-highlights". And the second image is from Kim Syberg's space wolves army (http://photobucket.com/images/space%20wolves%20kim%20syberg/). His army was features in an old WD and looked really great. But that was even before they introduced shadow grey. That was painted when GW still had the old flip-lid hexagonal paint pods. I think the paint's name was space wolves grey or blue-grey, or it could even have been shadow grey (but I don't think so, I can't remember if that name was came with the new paints/pots) before they made the screw-lid paints. Also his highlights were very nicely blended (I think the scan of the WD makes them look a bit washed out) making the basecoat look much brighter.

Shadow Grey. As long as I've been collecting, the colour of Space Wolves has been closest to Shadow Grey. NOT Space Wolves Grey, Space Wolves grey has always been a very pale blue.

BUT, just to throw a spanner in the works, even though GW "claim" their models are shadow grey and that's what they state in painting guides, I'm pretty sure the models painted by 'eavy metal aren't exactly shadow grey. The above picture you posted is of the 3rd edition (and newer perhaps?) Space Wolves which always struck me as being a decent amount lighter in tone than Shadow Grey (still no where near Space Wolves grey though) and the older Space Wolves like your lower image aren't 'eavy metal but struck me as being slightly darker than Shadow Grey.

However Shadow Grey and now it's replacement will get you close to what you desire. If you want something lighter in tone, mix in some Space Wolves grey (or whatever it's current equivalent is now).

I'm pretty sure Shadow grey has existed at the very least since I started collecting in 1996 with the tall clear flip tops (the ones that never dry out, opposed to the crappy later flip tops that constantly dried out). I remember because I accidentally knocked over a pot of shadow grey I had in one of the old tall hex pots which forced me to go out and buy a shadow grey in the newer flip top hex pots which were terrible and dried out on me.

I can't guarantee it existed in 1993 back when the 2nd edition Space Wolves first came out, but I was always under the impression that's what was used (or claimed) in painting guides even way back then.

vallejo game colour does all the old out of production paints. they will be the closest you'll find to the old ones like shadow grey and space wolf grey. Above poster is right about the old space wolf and the 2000s version being different.

the game colour range cover better than the gw paints, give you more in the bottle and have a much better container.

Can't really be too bothered to look up the dates on which paints would have been available at the time of the figures in question...though IIRC, those would have been during the period of the Coat D Arms paints...I didn't think VGC covered those paints, rather the Bolter bottle period.

The old paints are available still from Black Hat...names changed to protect the innocent, though similiar enough that you can still find what you are looking for:
