I had to bum rides to work from my parents before I got a car.
Hell I still have to bum rides from them until I learn how to drive. I wasn't to get my driver's license until I could pay for insurance and a vehicle to insure.
But that is one of the family rules. Cars are not cheap. You'll learn how to drive when you can afford to drive.

Mont I can't feel your pain. I joined the Army with no driver license and actually learn how to drive in South Korea using Humvee's first then a M577 track.

I learned to drive on an old john Deere tractor, the kind with the close front wheels like Homer had in the Simpsons that would always flip over on him. Granted I never went over about 5 MPH,but it taught me how to drive a stick and how not to take corners too fast. Which come to think of it, too fast on that thing was about 2 MPH on a corner.
I had to buy my first truck too, was a 500$ 1978 dodge d100.. the passenger door was held closed by a ratchet strap to the seat because the pillar where the door latch was rusted out. Good times, good times

Put all of your minis on ebay and shelf wargaming as a hobby until you have the means to afford it independently? I dunno, I guess it's just a cultural thing. I've genuinely never heard of people not getting hired because they don't own or have access to a car. Hell, I'm 30 and I still ride the bus to work.
I didn't pay for my minis, my parents paid for them just like they paid for all of my toys. They only did this after what they then called my "future fund" (basically car and college) was topped up. I had great parents, but the basic issue is that a car is necessary if you don't live in an urban area.
As for public transit, that wasn't an option. If you don't live in the inner ring of Chicago suburbs you necessarily rely on getting rides to the train station or lucking out and finding a place to stash your bike, and if you need to do this the cost will be significant; if it weren't you would be able to afford a car.
The problem gets even worse as you move west and things get even more spread out. Automatically Appended Next Post:
No offense, but that's ridiculous. There are very clear reasons to have a DL even if you don't have your own car, especially if you have a small family.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh. |

I agree since dear old dad is the only driver in the family, but to be fair to him, I got my Learner's Permit at 15 because we thought I would get a job in High School. Turns out I did not until after high school. And we also thought it would only take a month to teach me how to drive.
Turns out it has taken a little over two years so far, but he said I'll most likely have my license by November of this year at the latest.

Just a random observation. I think it is funny when people say, "This is just High School BS" like life after High School isn't full of High School BS too.
It just becomes Office Politics.

/real talk
I find that the drama is a bit less frequent, but more intense and on different matters. Working in a call site I see some of the most petty high school drama from grown ass adults. Hell when I was in the Navy it was my primary reason for not choosing to be assigned to an aircraft carrier, it like high school all over again.
On the topic of people making fun of my hobby: I am 6'4" and around 275 on an average, with a buzzed head and tats, people tend to leaveme alone. On the other hand when people do inquire or make snide remarks I tend to ask why they think its funny and tell them its no different than any other hobby, it all costs money and someone out there thinks its rediculous.

The only insults in your life that should make any impression at all are those that come from people you place importance on. If the people you place importance on are insulting you, re-evaluated who you put importance on.
Painting and playing with toy soldiers is part of the glorious and rich tapestry of what makes me Stompa. People small minded enough to dislike me purely on that basis aren't worth my time.
Besides, there are far more worthwhile reasons to dislike me.

Your father is absolutely right. If I was in his shoes I'd say exactly the same thing to my son.
Alternatively, if you don't buy your kid a car he will endlessly ask to borrow it, and further leech off you because getting a job in the US is difficult if you lack reliable transportation.
Just smack him in the head and tell him to get a job. Don't forget to ask "why you crying?"

Certain family members do it on occasion, I just remind them that I'm being more productive than if i were playing video games instead.
