Picked this up at a garage sale for $45, as a place to store my finished models. Its actually not big enough to store all of them, but it holds most of my painted ones. Check it out -
Sorry for picture quality, its hard to take pictures indoors that are good quality.
Each of the 5 levels: (last level is half empty, have like 30 tac / assault marines to put down there.

In case your wondering how many vehicles are in there, there are 17 rhino chassis vehciles, 2 land raiders, 5 dreadnoughts, 2 stormravens, and a land speeder. I have another land speeder, 3 drop pods, another stormraven, and another land raider to paint, not to mention a thunderhawk, which is way too big to fit in here.

uh.... lets see. In the case right there?
HQ's @ $15 each (average)
Librarian
Chaplain
Terminator Librarian
Terminator Chaplain
Terminator Captain
Astorath
HQ total = $95
10x terminators = $100
25x assault marines = $165
5x forgeworld assault marines = $40
10x sanguinary guard = $66
15x death company = $100
20x guardsmen = $50
1x guard command squad = $20
3x guard heavy weapons teams = $40
5x dreadnoughts = $200
2x vindicators = $100
3x baal predators = $150
5x predators = $250
2x land raiders = $120
5x razorbacks = $150
3x rhinos = $90
1x land speeder = $25
2x storm raven = $160
Total cost $1921, over a period of 5 years collecting (started in 2007) is $384.20 a year, though I didn't pay full retail for most of this. Factor in my unpainted stuff, and I've probably spent $500-$600 a year on 40k, which isn't that bad, really. I mean, $50 a month is nothing if you have a full time job.

Been trying to get a similar display case/cabinet but with a 2x2 spacing to put the realm of battle boards in (more appropriately the space for the armies on parade displays)
VERY impressive though

a 2x2 glass case would be crazy huge. This one is like 13x13, and it still weighs like 60 lbs. 2'x2' would be so heavy I don't know how I'd move it.

I'm with Horst, Makaleth. Even something like the Detolf from Ikea weighs in at close to 90lbs, if memory serves, and it's somewhere around 12"x15". With a 2'x2' footprint, that shelf would be an absolute beast. It'd look impressive, I'm sure, but you'd need a light, sturdy frame and plexiglass glazing, unless you plan on building it in situ and leaving it there until you dismantle it or the house crumbles around it.
Anyway, that's a nice looking case, Horst, made all the more impressive by the models it contains. Wish I could find something like that at a garage sale, although I imagine it'd be a pain to try and get home by myself in a little Honda Civic...
Did it come pre-wired or did you add the lighting yourself? I'm considering doing something to my Detolf, but I'm not quite sure which route to take (single light in the stock position at top-center, strip lighting along the shelf supports, etc.). With my models being packed in roughly as densely as yours, I'm afraid the guys on the lower shelves wouldn't get much light, as your appear to, unless I lit each shelf individually. Is it just the photo, or does that seem to be a problem with your setup?

The top 3 levels are all pretty visible, because of the mirrored back and glass shelves let a lot of light through.
It came lit.
Fortunately, I drive a truck, so I had no problem getting it home. Getting it in and out of the truck was a pain though.

Thanks guys, yeah... it would be stupid heavy... hence not getting one made up. The idea would be similar to an old TV cabinet a friend had.
But yes, prohibitively heavy! At the moment.
I am hoping that Ikea do something like this... a deeper billy book case would work (no need for the glass sides or shelves as that is REALLY heavy) but the glass door is the most important part... which is the easy part as well.
As for the case in hand, the mirror really helps with the lighting and display, that was a nice piece of luck. And driving a truck, that would come in so useful at times like this! Automatically Appended Next Post: Actually,

Very nice case.
I'm really jealous. A friend of mine bought me a nice glass case as a house warming gift, but because I have 2 small children it cannot go in the house OR display my mini's properly.

Why should the children stop it?
My mother used to run a day care center; My father just bolted the cabinets to the wall, so they don't tip over if they are climbed on. You would just have to bolt it to the wall and ensure that the doors lock, so the kids can't open it.

You don't have small children do you?
If you did, I wouldn't have to explain it to you.
My case is FULL glass. and flimsy. and filled with thousands of dollars of miniatures.
Sharp edges, greasy fingers, wobbly cabinet, filled with moderately delicate items.
no, I'll be keeping it in my garage workshop until my girls are older thanks.
