Terrainaholic has had Modest Magic product an alien city terrain piece which Nick has popped a teaser video of on Youtube. This thing looks fantastic.

Are these going to be laser-cut MDF? They look conducive to that. Looks pretty cool just from the general shape of it.

That MDF is way too thick. I think it would look better with about half that thickness MDF.

Not sure if it's laser cut... I'm not particularly clued up on the technical aspect of what he uses. I think it's a CNC machine?

Wow, Eldar Necromunda terrain. Good looking stuff. I dont have any use for that style, but could be tempted by more human looking terrain.

I just ordered one, and am swapping my Kickstarter castles for this set instead. In the backers only vid he showed how it all comes apart and says the whole thing fits in a 12" x 12" x 12" box

It's also modular and layers come off to make it usable in-game (also from the backers only vid, I think he will do a longer general release one soon).

It is foam, but looks very sturdy. Terrainaholic's design + Modest Magic construction = pure win in my book! That's almost enough terrain for a whole alien table for $100!

I don't know if it's up for general sale yet, or is it? The 30% off is for mother loaders, 10% off for backers, but will still just be $99 for anyone who missed the Kickstarter

It's made of pink foam which at that thinkness is extremely sturdy. Yes, if you grab both sides and really try to break it... it will break... just like any terrain material lol.

The perk of it not being MDF is it is a LOT lighter and a LOT cheaper. Your talking about damn near a whole 40k table of Not-Eldar terrain that is collapsible, modular, and stack-able for under $100.

It's great for an Eldar / Dark Eldar city. About half thickness on about 100% of those pieces would make it a perfect must have. I can see why they did it and can totally forgive if it's all made of pink foam. The under $100 is totally awesome. I'd say these guys pulled off a winner.

Ok so the "Alien City" on my store is for the backers only. Thats why no pics or descriptions. Once Terrainaholic gets his painted up I will put a new $99 product in the store with pics and full descriptions available to the general public. I just wanted to give my backers first crack at it! Also, it is CNC routered out of 1/2 inch pink foam. Look to Terrainaholic you tube channel for A LOT more videos with an unboxing, an assembly video, painting tips all of that.

Ah ok my mistake. Any chance of half size kits of the Alien City like the castle Nick? I don't have a table that can fit all that on it at the moment!

For those that can't see youtube at work, here is 2 screen caps of the video. The set is so large I couldn't pull a clean shot of the whole thing at once lol. Keep in mine that is a 6x3 table for scale... effing HUGE.

Thanks for the screen captures! It's even better when he starts disassembling it and moving pieces around in the backer vid. And of course it's a lot clearer how intricate it is with all the different pieces etc, and with less blurry biews.

Can't wait for the unboxing and assembly/painting vid from Terrainaholic. When do you expect that to be? Maybe next week?

At first I looked at this late last night on my iphone and was like, eh for 40k that doesn't work terrible well. After rewatching the backer only vid it to do screencaps... I was horribly wrong. The footings alone are fantastic for cover as they take up much more room then I thought. There is a ton of those tower formations all over that can be removed to their parts to do a tower complex.




The not-webway portal is way better then I thought at first glance.


The main structure disassembles down... and is that an Eldar/Dark Eldar Skyshield platform I see?


EDIT: Sorry for the motion blur. There is so much stuff he had to hurry to fit the walk through in one video, so getting a still shot was tough.

I had the same thoughts about the web way and not-sky shield. Very useful for 40k... that's what I'm getting it for

He has hinted about an expansion by Terrainaholic to go with this, too

They should do proper promo videos. The guy doesn't have much to say and was the least impressive part of that video.

The city scape though looked good and it would be quick to have it in black too. I too think its a bit thick.
If it was thinner that would be better and it would also be good if the edges were angled so that the edges were thinner maybe?

It's not really his to show off (he's been contracted to make it as he said in the video)

The eventual retailer will do a far more fancy and in depth look at the city scape, but kindly allowed him to post this quick look (if he'd spent 30 mins on a very detailed look I bet they would have said no)

Yeah this was I think meant to be a quick, check out this col table that will be for sale before long. The in depth review will be from Terrainoholic or other folks that do the reviews on it.

Right, although you will be able to buy it through the Modest Magic site Or Terrainaholic's eBay store, I believe. Nice partnership they are embarking on!

I like it in general but I think I'd prefer thinner pieces. That mdf stuff for Infinity is really nice and I think doing something similary for this would be a better way to go. I understand that wood weights more than foam but foam is bulky and the weight of mdf isn't really a significant burden to carry.

The think the choice of foam vs MDF is the cost of materials and cut time. The foam any thinner would have structural issues and while MDF would be optimal, the cost would be a hell of a lot higher then $99 lol.

While it's a spiffy design, it's not really a 'city' is it? Just a series of catwalks and platforms.

Yeah, I think that's just a temporary name. And if there is an expansion maybe more structures will be possible. Hard to top that for $99, though!

Nobody has posted Terrainaholic's unboxing video yet and it seems fairly importatnt to the discussion since it shows exactly what it is.

Mother of god that is a lot of stuff. It looks big assembled, but seeing it layed out flat is nuts. I'm seriously torn on trading a castle for one. As an Eldar player my mind goes through the roof on things I could do. Pink foam is easily sandable so all those edges could be rounded to look more bone like. My buddy even mentioned moding it to be Scorn terrain for warmahordes.

That Terrainaholic unboxing video is awesome!

And "ACT 1" (Alien Civilization Type 1) is a way better name
