Subject: Henchman builds in 6th edition (NOT Coteaz)

So, I've been thinking about henchmen lately as a means of complementing my abysmal lack of AP1/2.
At a local tournament over the weekend, I ran 3 Warriors, 3 Warriors with Carapace Armor/Plasmagun, and 5 psykers for the S7 AP2 large blast. It turned out to not be quite as massive a fire target as I thought it would be, and it performed remarkably well.
I was wondering: What other henchmen squads do you run in 6th edition to complement GK?

Honestly, start with Coteaz. You need an inquisitor anyway, and Coteaz makes your henchmen scoring and gives you the best psychic powers in the game with a nice bonus "I hate reserves" ability. Considering his low point cost there's really no reason not to take him.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

A pretty well rounded detachment, doesn't use Coteaz, makes great use of two underused units. I face more problems with Psykers and Infantry than I ever do with tanks in 6ed...

There is almost no reason not to take him, but a barebones Inquisitor is MUCH cheaper. You can still take one divination power with a regular Inquisitor, but you have the option of take grenades or terminator armour and a psycannon. Regular Inquisitors are just as useful and flexible as Coteaz, the only reason he's a MUST HAVE would be his ability to make henchmen troops. I admit he's still (slighty) better value than a regular Inquisitor, but the other inquisitors offer lot's of options that could fit an army better.
If he's not concerned with scoring, there are other equally valid options. Besides, having your own Inquisitor could be more fluffy and that's reason enough.
Back to the topic. Of henchmen. I like the squad you picked and if you're after AP2 it might be the most well rounded option. I'd probably go one of two ways with the squad. Either bump up the pskyers to 8 and take warriors for the rest of the squad. Or take out all the pskyers, add 3 plasma cannon servitors, fill the rest with henchmen. The second option would benefit from a Jokearo (or two) as he could give a valuable upgrade to the squad and his weapons fit with the squad. The second option also needs an Inquisitor to work (for the servitors), so if you're doing that you may as well give him divination too. Your warrior acolytes could also take bolters/storm bolters if they have the spare points, but since they are a bullet shield I can see why you wouldn't bother with them.

Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee. |

There's a couple reasons I can think of not to take him. For one, the off chance special characters are limited/disallowed, as some tournaments do. Another is simply because you have both of your HQ slots taken up already. One example is how in the last tournament I went to, I ran two terminator inquisitors with psycannons and divination to remarkable effect. This was the one specifically that I needed the AP2 support for. The final reason I can think of is if you're doing GK allies, and you have already filled up the two troop slots with something else (Terminators?), but still want a squad of henchies as additional support.

Now that's something I could get behind. Simple to use and gets the job done. How do you find the DCAs manage without grenades?

Well, the goal was not to create a henchman army, but merely to fill in the gaps that 6th edition created in an all- GK army. AP2 is the biggest gap between them and other marine armies that I've identified thus far. I like the plasma cannon servitors, but my problem with them is that they can't fire on the move, while the psykers can. Jokearo are an interesting concept, especially now that they can move and snap fire.
The naked warriors are simply there to allocate additional wounds from the chimera explosion/first time they get fired into. As you state, they're a bullet shield. There may actually be some virtue in giving them carapace armor however, but I'm not yet convinced.

If you do decide to go with carapace armor, a single Jokearo could be very effective. Not only do most of the effects help out your ranged weapons, but you could get the +1 armour save turning carapace armour to power armour or they 5+ invul save. Not only that but he's very versatile. If you do end up getting too close for comfort his heavy flamer can come in handy.

Only tried the 5 terminators + Inquisitor as a allied combo. They work -very- well, they eat everything and carry on walking! And they dish out horrendous fire-power, keeping the two psycannons @ the back.
I just realized I may prefer mindstrikes to bloodstrikes (Rune priest, I woe the day) and that DCA could do better than, really, anything I could attempt to fit in a SR. So I dunno, we'll see .
