I was playing a SW player on Monday and when I assaulted one of his grey hunter squads not only did he rapid fire at me with his boltguns (re-rolling 1's to hit because of his banner the git) he then proceeded to counter charge me.

I can't believe how good this is and it seems to have slipped through the FAQ net, can they really do both?

Does anyone have any thoughts about this other than maybe, I need to get a Spacewolf army?

Its legal. Nothing in either rule prevents the use of both rules. Its not really all that gamebreaking. I mean, hitting on 6's (Even while re-rolling 1's) makes overwatching most weapons kinda ineffective. The bigger hit comes from the counter attack and there is essentially no way around that.

n0t_u: No, but six can shoot out of it. Other than that it's a Rhino with a Heavy Flamer thrown on if I remember correctly.
Pretre: Thanks! I guess my pants are safe and clean after all.

I beleive that Space wolves have to pass a leadership test now to counterattack so there is a chance that they don't get to do it in some assaults.

Makes it less of a gamebreaker now.

They always had to, even in 5th.

You do realise that grey hunters are probably one of the best if not THE best troops choice in the game in terms of points to power right?

What he did is entirely legal, it may seem over powered to you but that is simply because you didn't use a tactic that would work against them.

Assulting space wolves is a bad idea off the bat, our units nearly all have counter and we usually have 1 attack plus ccw plus pistol plus usually charging which gives us 3 attacks each normally.

We however still die like normal marines. Shooting us will kill us (eventually) especially with plasma weapons or better.

Space wolves excell in close quaters fire fights, counter charges, outflanking, pycher nullifying and warp powers . Finding the weakness is the means of victory, very shooty armies can kill us quickly but sending big gribbily things like carnies our way will get them killed in one shot. JOTWW eats anything with initative 1 or 2...

Also, yes we have to take leadership tests to counter and our average leadership is 8 with no sargents (we don't get them we just get the option to put a LD 9 wolf guard in)

By counter charge I hope you mean 'counter-attack' where he rolled a Ld test and passed it to get the +1A and not actually moved his models to yours as if he charged you while you did not. If he moved his models as if he charged you then that is wrong. If he moved them 3" at his I step to get into btb then that's fine.

Ah, he did, I don't think he knew that (I'll give him the benefit of the doubt)

Also remind him to make his leadership check.

All that counter assault allows him to get is +1 attack per model. That's it. You are still the assaulter.

It's best if you soften his troops up a little more than standard marines with shooting before you assault.

it is, roll ldr if pass the defending unit gets +1 A as though they charged. What would really saddene me is if they also had defensive grenades lol
