Hey all
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440160a&prodId=prod1710092a
Can anyone tell me if the gold parts are NMM or MM? If the picture or link doesn't work it's the CSM Forgefiend/Maulerfiend.
I would love to achieve a similar effect for my gold paints. I use gold + wash atm but it feels way to bright :(
Tips and tricks are always welcome
Kind regards.

Metallic metallics. You can tell easily from the 360 view since the light source is stationary and the model is moving, so the light reflects off different areas as it moves, NMM assumes a stationary and imaginary light source, so the the areas which glint with light would stay in the same place as the model rotates.
As for how to do it, I dunno exactly how they did theirs, how I do mine which I think gives a similar look is basecoat Balthasar Gold, wash with dark brown (ideally Devlan Mud, but since you can't buy it anymore you might have to just use black or mix your own) and then highlight with shining gold, and a couple of very fine edge highlights with something like burnished gold.

That is indeed a metallic gold. If I had to guess, it's Balthasar Gold, washed with Nuln Oil and edge highlighted with Ironbreaker or Runefang Steel. For better results, layer some different shades of gold.

They paint their gold by alternating between dark and light areas over the surfaces. it kind of gives an effect of a fake light source/shine. Lets say you paint some brwon on one patch of the gold, and then you blend it into gold in the next area. Then you will have something like that. Very tideous though.

The best piece of advice I have ever been given when painting gold is, base the are with a brown first, it allows the gold to cover a lot more easier and a lot more smoothly

If you'd like more advice, just buy Balthasar Gold, it has good enough coverage that you won't need to basecoat the area in brown first. It's saved me heaps of time in painting gold, as to get a smooth layer of brown takes 2 to 3 coats depending on what is under the brown, and then to get a smooth layer of gold takes another layer or two. Balthasar Gold typically takes 1 to 2 layers regardless of what you paint it over.
I've heard some of the Vallejo golds have excellent coverage too, personally I haven't tried them so can't recommend them, but I can definitely recommend Balthasar as I've pretty much fully swapped to it for my gold painting needs (at least for the first coat). My only real problem with Balthasar is it could be a touch brighter (as it darkens a bit when washing over it).

Wich of the Vallejo golds would be best?

The Vallejo model air range metallics are fantastic and great for doing TMM.
Also vallejo offer a range of alcohol based metallic paints, which are spectacular, although it does require a separate set of brushes and alcohol for clean up etc.
Lastly, TMM is generally done without washes, you use black and white paints with your metals, and go from there.

You can also make a gold or brass colour by painting on a silver and washing it with a brown until you reach the shade you want.
