Subject: New to Fantasy and need help picking an army

Hello,
I'm new to fantasy and I don't know what arrmy to pick. I'mm torn between a few. I play Nids in 40k and I don't relly want another swarm army.
Beastmen because they look so cool.
Orges because less painting.
Orcs and goblins because I want to run goblins on wolves and spiders.
Warriors of Chaos because there models are so cool.
I can learn the tactics for what ever army. I will be playing skaven and orcs and goblins. I want to know which army will do the best. I just don't want to lose all my games.
Thanks
P.S. If this is in the wrong forum catagory I'm sorry didn't know where to put.

Beastmen and Orcs and Goblins are decent armies, but not considered the most competitive.
Less sure about Ogres.
Warriors are very, very, good, however.
They can all field small, elite forces, though I will point out that a whole bunch of Wolf/Spider Riders is never really necessary; two or three units of 5 is enough.
Against Skaven and Orcs and Goblins, the Warriors are probably your over-all best choice (though "who'd beat who" is always more dependent on army composition and generalship than anything else).
Ogres can get hurt by Skaven/Goblin war machines (Multiple Wounds comes into play there), though they don't have to worry about things that ignore armour too much.
Also, Mournfangs can chew through blocks of Slaves/Goblins faster than anything I've ever seen.
Beastmen may struggle against either of those armies, since they have a lot of expensive models with poor saves, which are easy prey for Warp Lightning Cannons, Fanatics, etc.

Beastmen are a brilliant army. They are hard to get right however as there are only a few builds that work.
OnG have a tonne of choice in their new book. Savage Orcs are now bent especially with the magic spell that allows them to teleport and the one that allows them to reroll in combat(not sure what they get to reroll)
Ogres are retardedly bent and simple to play. All you do is push mournfang forwards.
Warriors are fairly similar to ogre tactics, but with the addition of 6 dicing gateway and rolling the stubborn 4+ ward on mot units.

Thanks, I think im going to go with dwarves. Because I think the ranged will help against the blocks of horde units, and the warriors can hold on there own against ranks of slaves.

Yeh it's in the wrong thread - this is for Army Lists. You probably wanted General Discussion.
To answer your question of what army to play - there are 3 real guilding factors:
1. Your budget (horde armies are more expensive)
2. The amount of effort you want to put into painting (again, horde armies are the issue)
3. Personal Preference.
Why do you like Dwarves? You didn't even mention them to begin with.
I think you're always best collecting an army that appeals to you on a personal level. Either the models, lore or general 'atmosphere' of an army. All other factors are secondary.
Starting an army because it's considered strong is lame and also just a bad idea.... if you're that sort of person you'll probably just abandon everything you've built the next time an army book is released and have to start over. Because almost everytime GW releases an army for any systen it's generally considered 'OP' (as a marketing tool?)
Lastly, the word you keep looking for is "their", not "there".
"There" is a place.

In all honesty, the best way to get rid of large horde units is a lot of magic spells. And Dwarves have none of those. I won't try to sway you if you've made up you're mind, just pointing this out!

The first rule of playing the stunties is to use the correct name is Dwarfs not with a "V and an E"

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Yep. Tolkien may have revolutionized the fantasy genre (or created it), but Warhammer drags us (somewhat) back to the roots. Dwarfs.
But yes, artillery cannot compete with Dwellers and Purple Sun for Horde-thinning efficiency.
