Which I just found out from radio 4's Today program.

WHAT?!?!

Does this mean that a: 4chan has replaced the Bildeberg group, b: memes have more power than record companies, or c: I'm completely out of touch after just 6 months and this is just The Crazy Frog all over again?

Run a whole lot of wfrp and other rpg's, play The Woods and Kill Team, gather and look mournfully at imperial guard knowing I'll never finish enough to use them on the tabletop

For those who aren't sure what we're discussing, A. either welcome to the planet or congrats on finally leaving your bunker!

This song started playing on the radio a few weeks ago, and it marked the day I officially felt like a hipster.

It's like a metaphor or something for how crap most music is to the point where it now doesn't matter what the lyrics mean because they weren't really saying anything anymore...

I think the first time that happened to me was the same year I got into 40K. It wasn't something as...special...as this song though.

It means its a big improvement over the X Factor gak infecting the UK, it has a different attitude to most music in its genre. Gangnam = playing around, Gangsta = head firmly up bottom.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Gangnam is the posh district of Seoul where the top stars live.

The song is a subtle, diversive rant against the shallow consumerism of modern Korean society.

(Not North Korea, obviously.)

If I recall correctly, Psy has been on the "Ellen" show twice now, teaching Ellen Degeneres and her crowd how to do the dance from that song. I was also at a local college bar/club two weeks ago, and they actually played the original version in its entirety...and I lost my gak when I saw people who'd probably never actually watched the video dance away to it

So, needless to say, that song has become pretty popular in the US also.

I watch it solely for the guy dancing above him in the lift.

That always cracks me up, as do the videos where he's inserted into films and suchlike.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Why are you assuming 4chan is somehow connected to its success, or that 4chan has anything to do with the cancerous garbage floating around the mainstream web? I think it's a pretty good song. It's pretty cool that it's gotten such good attention.

As far as I know, 4chan wasn't involved. It was posted on youtube on the official Psy page. Someone saw and sent to a friend and so on and so on. It is now at 1/3 of a billion views, which is nuts. It was just an infectious song that people liked with a fun video.

I also think it is interesting that it is a pop song that is using pop music to critique pop culture materialism. There was a quote from Psy about people only spending $2 on lunch so they could spend $6 on a cup of coffee, and how silly he thought that was.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.

What's extraordinary is the success of the song given that so few people understand Korean.

The success is entirely attributable to the video which really doesn't need a language connection in the first place.

So help me, I frigging love this song. I haven't heard it on the radio, but I don't own a radio, so....

It's interesting, I generally hate American/Canadian pop music, but I do like some British and a lot of pop music that isn't in English at all. Nothing I can think of off the top of my head, but I've noticed when I hear pop music with lyrics I can understand, I usually turn it off, but when it's in a foreign language, I often like it.

It might be that I like it because it isn't entirely generic. The fact I can't understand the words helps too, since western pop is so same-y when it comes to... well, nearly everything.

One western pop song is every other western pop song with a different singer using different words to describe the exact same event. Soon they're going to run out of ways for the males to talk about 'loving' random women, and for females to talk about 'loving' and then rejecting random males.

Even if GS was about that stuff, the fact I can't understand what is being said means that it can't taint my enjoyment. Also, the video being devoid of muscled male dancers with fake tan, make up and oiled bodies wearing nothing but speedos and shoes, and size -1 women with fake tan, huge boobs and a small square of material covering their nipples and ladypassage, does make it infinitely more tolerable.

My friend showed me this video a couple weeks back. To say that I was wildly amused was an understatement. I think it's really the amalgamation of everything together: the lyrics, the foreign lyrics, the video, the dance moves, and the GORGEOUS redheaded Korean girl...all of it makes for an awesome 4 minutes. Did I mention the Korean girl was gorgeous? And I'm usually not attracted to Asian girls, but wow. Wow.

That's Hyuna, she's actually a pretty successful popstar in her own right, even had a music video or two banned from Korean TV for being too racy.

Here she is being really hot:
