I run Grey Hunters with a Wolf Standard and I've been wondering what the best time to activate the standard is. At first I figured that you can activate it as soon as you are in combat, however that is not the case as the rules clearly state that once you activate it, the re-rolls will be in effect for the next assault phase. With this in mind, you have to remember to activate the banner in the movement or shooting phase, either your own, or your opponents.

You can activate it in your own shooting phase, just before you charge. However with random charge distance, there is a chance that you can roll badly and then not get the charge off: Does the re-rolling of 1's include charge distance? I think it does as its part of the Assault Phase, so maybe the banner could help here. However if you do roll bad, or have a long charge that you might not make, then activating the banner at this point could waste the once off effect.

In your first assault phase, you have the charge (or counter charge) bonus attacks, so you are already buffed in the first phase. Activating the banner in the second phase, however gives you the bonus of the banner in a phase where nobody has the charge bonuses. So it gives you a second phase where you are buffed making it easier to break a unit if you didn't manage on the first turn. The downside to this however is you have less attacks, so in theory less 1's to re-roll therefore its less effective.

To conclude: When you know you will definitely reach combat with a charge, its best to activate the banner for the first assault. If you are unsure if you will make the charge, then dont risk activating the banner and it becoming useless, rather wait and use the banner in the opponents assault phase.

One last point: activating the banner in your opponents shooting phase might deter them from charging your unit if the combat could go either way; but 've yet to see this as my opponents are usually bloodthirsty

Its better to burn out than to fade away

I usually will activate it on assaults I know might go badly. I like using it with when I have wolf guard in termie armor, the rerolling ones is really fun

Usually I activate it in the shooting of my or my opponents turn when Im about to assault for the first time or when he is close enough to make an assault on me.

I figure that its not much to it ones youre in reach, its allways better to use it with as many grey hunters alive as possible (which is usually in first assualt, you will at least not get more grey hunters later on).

the tactics is to come in reach of what you want to face and stay away from the rest.

Its good to use when your about to be assaulted. Rerolling 1s on overwatch fire is pretty sweet.

Its also a poor man's Fleet. You can re-roll any rolls of a 1 for the next assault phase. That mean charge distance as well.

havent dakka already established that when rolling 2d6 the minimum roll is 2 (double 1)

you may reroll any roll of 1, but the roll for charge is a 2d6 roll not a 1d6 roll so 1 is not an issue. same goes with leadership tests and alike

This, especially when you have plasma in there too. Then again, I don't assault with my wolves a lot now I come to think of it...

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

Pretty silly interpretation if you ask me. This would rule out melta bombs and armor bane attacks as well as if you overwatched a dreadnought. Single dice pen rolls could re-roll ones a but a melta shot could not? Besides the entry specifically states any dice roll of a 1 can be rolled. Seems pretty clear they mean any roll of the dice that has a 1 on it.
