Well, I've now had a rowing machine in my house for 3 years, and I row for an hour 3-4 days a week.

I have a DVD player in front of it, and I crack on with episode of something each time I get on the bloody thing. Its been ages, and I've literally rowed my way through everything!

Starting from the top, (this is a bloke who didn't watch much TV at all and hadn't seen very many shows or took any interest in it during his military career) I've now watched (every season as well!) of...

24 (awful!)
The Shield (Hoofing)
Band of Brothers (Hoofing)
The Unit (fething awful)
The Wire (Hoofing)
Lost (Worse than awful)
Rome (Hoofing but too short)
The Sopranos (Hoofing)
The X files (Hoofing)
Firefly (not so good, but watchable)
Every Sharpe (Hoofing)

And I've started scraping the bottom of the barrel. I wrapped on Blood and Sand after 3 episodes because it was ridiculous. I watched two episodes of "Ultimate Farce" and couldnt row for laughing. Ive tried to get into CSI but its awful, and I've watched every Sherlock incarnation ever, the JB ones were good, and I even did episode 1 of Elementary, but I want to get back into an actual show, with a driven plot, that has more than about ten episodes in. I loved the few months I was on "The Wire" and "The Shield" for example.

Any recommendations? I mean, Ill even watch gak when I've nothing else to do (see sitting through all of Lost, which I hated by episode 6) but I like gritty, serious stuff with realistic violence.. so, The Wire over 24, and nothing like Firefly that has "wacky" characters in, and "zany" dialogue that I don't find funny or clever, because I just sit there thinking "who the feth would take that dippy bastard on board a spacecraft?!"

I mean.. Did anyone else think "Prometheus" has a sort of, wacky Whedonesque vibe about it? It was brilliantly shot and looked amazing, but the crew fethed the film up. If you spend a trillion dollars, why would you recruit a wisecracking mohawk emo-Doctor (who smokes pot inside his space suit?!!) a mentally unbalanced Religious zealot, a Biologist who surely who surely has the IQ of a pork pie (lets pat the alien snake?!) Oh and a weird as feth Ann Coulter type woman. Something has gone wrong when the most believable and professional guy is the captain and he is a wise cracking black dude who only wears overalls, sports a baseball cap and likes to play his accordion on the bridge?

Anyway, I'm off on a tangent there!

It seems I don't like things that are "cool" for nerds (So nothing with zombies/anime) or anything aimed at teenagers like Buffy the fething Vampire Slayer. If its meant to be comical, only in little dry bits and mixed in with violence, such as Rome or the Sopranos.

So, any suggestions? I'm getting back on it in 2 hours and If I don't find something soon, I might wind up picking up something with Pauly Shore in.

Is Hoofing good or bad?

* Game of Thrones. If Hoofing is good, and you liked Rome, you'll probably like it.

* Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

* Do you like Nature shows, like Blue Planet?

* Do you like Science shows, like The Universe?

* Dirty Jobs. An American show where this one dude does crappy jobs for a few days, like cleaning out storm drains/sewers, Port-O-Jon cleaning, and stuff.

* The Borne Identity trilogy.

Do you like the idea of holes ripping in time leading to past and future? Try Primeval-it's even a British show. The characters are likable, there is violence, lots of death, and judging from your sense of humor, you'll get a kick out of the guy who ends up running the institution they work out of. Pilot episode is pretty crappy graphics, but the story is great and it becomes more than just tears in time, it's the characters' interactions that make the show. Also, the villain of season 1-3 is quite possibly the most twisted person ever-you'll see why, I won't spoil it. Season 1-3 are on Netflix, if you have that.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

That was Vitruvian.

As he reads this, he also suggests Yu-Gi-Oh!

I liked breaking bad at first, then I elaborately plotted the death of every character as they became annoying gakkers.

*looks at his usual list of shows*

Well, damnit. I don't think I have anything on my list that Matty would enjoy.

Farscape's a pretty good series though. Especially if you pick up "The Peacekeeper Wars" movie which was made a few years later to give 'closure' to the series.
For "Gritty, serious" you might enjoy USA Network's "Burn Notice". It's MacGyver, in a sense, if MacGyver was an ex-spy and was perfectly fine with shooting someone dead.
Being a cable show though, there is a bit less in the way of blood and gore...
USA also has "Covert Affairs" which is helmed by the same chap who helmed "The Bourne Identity".

I'd be able to suggest more, but since you don't like funny things (monster! ) I'm at a bit of a loss.

I have to second the recommendation for FarScape as well. It's got a style all of its own, and you can tell it didn't have the biggest budget in the world, but the characters and stories were great.

Sons of Anarchy
Game of Thrones
Battlestar Galactica (The modern ones, not the 70s ones).

Archer as its legitimate successor and a cartoon is better.

I would go for American classics: Dallas (the 80s version!!!) Cheers, Frasier, ER series 1-3 surprisingly good.

Lot's of people are telling you what to watch, here's what you shouldn't waste your time with:

Every series of Star Trek Voyager, Next Generation series 1-4, Terminator: sarah connor chronicles, Primeval is awful. There are more, and when they come back to me, I'll post them.

Instead of TV series, go for classic films. Point Blank (Lee Marvin) Is a classic, made-for-Matty-movie. You'll love it or your money back

What about documentary. There plenty of good one's about your old regiment the Paras

Tru blood is ok, but I'm always left wishing for Peter Cushing to turn up and offer them a garlic and stake 5 course meal!

Fringe? Don't get scared by JJ Abrams name, it's actually pretty good.

Homeland was pretty good. And it's on season 2 now.

Californication is hilarious, in a dark and moody (see what I did there?!?!?) way. It has a ton of nudity as well.

Louie is also pretty fun/interesting. It's a bit more awkward-fun though. Some episodes are downright depressing but good.

Friday Night Lights if you like american soccer. See it even if you don't like football.

West Wing. See it just for an orientation in pop culture. Then start watching The Newsroom.

Some excellent suggestions, cheers lads!

Ive wrote down..

Boardwalk Empire
House of Cards
Sons of Anarchy
Point Blank

That outta do me for a while, I think my brother has Sons and Boardwalk Empire on DVD.

Regards Tru-Blood, I'm not really into Vampire stuff, Oh and I watched Homeland, I thought it was merely watchable, and by episode 8 it had descended into farce... Especially the last "perfectly willing to blow myself to smithereens but decide not to at the absolute perfect moment because daughter I hardly know and clearly don't like asks me not to"

I found Boardwalk Empire to be about the most boring show I've ever seen, but that could just be me, as plenty of other people seem to enjoy it.

Breaking Bad gets rave reviews, it should probably be on the list, but I've never seen it myself.

And everyone really should check out Archer.
