I personaly don't like the idea of tayloring an army to fight a specific force however things I would change I would drop both sets of Psykers as tyranids have a lot of stuff that can really hamper your use of them, and the PBS will mainly only be useful for it's blast template as tyranids are fearless if they stay in Sinapse range so you can't use them for the fancy LD thing unitil you knock those out usnless thats your plan. Also for your gaunt hunter unit I would be more inclined to use 4 flamers rather than 4 GL, Just think you'll get more out of them.

it's a testing list against a friend. He's tailoring for anti-guard, i'm tailoring for anti-nid. Like i say, experiment :-)
I think you're right with your call on the flamers, but i think only for one turn. I don't particularly want to get close enough to be able to use the flamer, as if i have, they're already lost :-)
He runs a lot of gaunts so the plates are needed just as plates. Mass hits and mass casualities. The idea with his run is to kill as many of his bodies as possible as he moves them fast, and then to go to work on his mother and other nasties.
I'm having problems with target prioritising for his type of list, so this is a good way for me to see if some new ideas work :-). He only really has one thing that has any affect on the psychic powers, so against a list that i didn't know, i would definitely agree with you on that one!

Don't really see the point of the PBS, if the tyranid player is worth his salt, everything will be in synapse range and therefore fearless. Not to mention he'll have 5+ DTW rolls on almost everything except gaunts.

By PBS, I mean pysker battle squad. It seems to just eat up the points against tyranids.
I think flamers would be better than grenades personally.

cheers :-), what would you spend the points on? I find that they're pretty effective and cheap at providing strong anti-horde pie plates, and he only has one model (the mother) that does anything about the DTW modifier. If anything, i can use it as bait to bring the mother into an autocannon cross-fire trap, and taking it away from the main bulk of the army.
at 80 points i think they're pretty cheap.
I definitely understand your point about the flamers. Maybe it's because i haven't been gambling enough, but ive run a few flamers in every list i've played so far (probably 30-40 games) and only used them (outside the context of overwatch) once, and that was when i had to go on the offensive against space marines.
With the range of the grenade launcher, i just feel like it suits the chimera better. i want the squad to be mobile and shooty and just feel that he'd tear it open and tear them up if i got that close to him, without them being designed as a suicide squad.

See I love flamers in the chimera. You can get close without worrying about your men getting shot up. I'd bring some AV14 or a valk with MRP. A LR Exterminator gun boat would be decent. All the AP4 will chew through warriors. I've had bad luck with them, but I was probably using it wrong. A vanilla LRBT with no upgrades is anther pie plate. Hard to remove too. The valk with MRP is 2 large blasts per turn, it can easily wreck gaunts, and again unless he has a flyrant, it'll be practically invulnerable.

yeah, model restrictions mean a no to the fliers. I have just ordered one and will get another two (to make 2 vendetta and a valkyrie in a 1250 list) but am going to stay away from LRBT. I think that everyone brings effective anti-tank now, so in running a guard list, i'm going to go flier heavy and ignore the tanks. LRBT is 150 points and the Battle squad at strength 6 pie plate is 80 points (+ 10 for every +1 strenght (strength equal to number of psykers in the squad), so cheaper and presents a bit more of a challenge. People don't really expect you to take them and with their abilities, only one has to draw line of sight. I find it very easy to hide them behind LOS blocking terrain and only present one at a time to the enemy.
I know that i'll get unstuck against a librarian and other such psykers, but then i just prioritise shooting to minimise their perils advantages.
I'm still experimenting and am finding all of your help and suggestions very applicable and brilliant (i am arguing the point mainly to facilitate the discussion and debate)

I don't see why you'd bring chimeras if you think anti-tank is a non-issue. I understand model restrictions, no argument there.
I can see the PBS being ok, It's just that soulstorm is so unreliable. Most people bring them for weaken resolve. People don't exepect you to take them, but they also aren't scared when you do. It's just more infantry to deal with, which they were planning for anyway.
I also just noticed the primaris psyker. Seems like a waste of points there, they're not that great unfortunately.

yeah, he's only ever been successful in anti-horde. He usually gets 7 consistent shots (usually giving me a lucky 5 hits) but has also given me 12's to take out enough models to save 2 inches off a charging range and rendering the charge move null. I find he's also an effective way of denying my opponent the warlord victory point. He also is my most nicely painted model lol so i jump at any opportunity to throw him in :-) (i have a rule with myself whereby i don't paint any detail on any models until all of the assembled models haveat least one coat of playable paint on them. As a result, mr. Primaris is the only one that has been finished)
Chimeras are more for the guns that you get with it And the searchlight. Plus you can get that 1st movement turn with some extra maneuverability which is useful. The way i see it, 3 multi laser and 3 heavy bolter shots and a searchlight are well worth the 55 on their own. To put in a sentinel with a multi laser and a searchlight, you are looking at 36, with the weakened armour. Chimeras are a pretty good addition to any list so i dont mind obtaining the models for them (i have 2, but would ideally want three).
soulstorm is pretty unreliable but easily gets the points back with a hit. I think the worst luck i've had with them in a game was one psychic test fail, two perils (first adouble 1 and then a double 6), 2 successful deny the witch and 2 scatters. lol not one hit, but even the threat of them (to a space marine player with a couple of nicely grouped tactical squads) was enough to draw two rounds of fire and priority attention (which in that game was very much worth its points on its own). The novelty might wear off with my frst tournament thrashing lol, but so far, i've enjoyed the risk and only failed to get their points back on paper that once.
I think you've just got to be smart in where you hide them.

I was not discounting chimeras...I love them. I was discounting the idea of not wanting LRs because the enemy has anti-tank.

hellhound? If he takes a lot of gaunts, a hellhound will destroy anything within range.
Also, I've found sniper rifles to be pretty lackluster :/ I had hope for them since I have a ton of ratling models, but 3+ then 4+ to wound doesnt translate to much. especially with only 3 of them. I would put plasma guns on the vets and mount them in the chimera. They can go monstrous creature hunting. The chimera with its HF and ML can take care of any gaunts it runs into.

For snipers you need to have an entire squad of them to realy get much out of them. Also they are really only useful if your opponent has models worth killing. Expensive MEQ Sgt's (with new 6th ed rules) or Monster creatures, as you wound on a 4+ no matter what the toughness is. If your freind ran a nidzila list i'd take 3 squads of ten squads of ratlings and you would see.
