Helsreach was damn good. Aaron Dembski-Bowden is the man. He also wrote The First Heretic, which was rock solid as well. I also really liked Know No Fear if we're going by Horus Heresy stuff, but that's Dan Abnett.
Now if we're talking Chaos Space Marines, then the Night Lords novels (again by Aaron Dembski-Bowden) are honestly some of the best sci-fi novels I've ever read, 40k or not. They're really damn good.

As pretty much anyone with a brain has already said/will say, anything by Aaron Dembski-Bowden is solid gold, grade-A fantasticalness. His Night Lords Trilogy pretty much wins at everything ever. Also, The Emperor's Gift is well worth a read, particularly for unexpected yet well-balanced humour, and...

Dead tie between Space Wolf and Blood Claw for me, personally. As a Space Wolf player, I loved the insight into the whole choosing process that the Wolves go through, as well as them dealing with the Wulfen DNA at the beginning of their initiation.
Truth be told, though, I haven't ready many. I've basically read the first Space Wolf trilogy and up through Mechanicum of the Horus Heresy novels.

Bounding Black Templar Assault Marine

I think Rynn's World by far is the best book in the series. I have bene playing Black Templars since Codex Armegeddon came out and like the Templars and lot but Helsreach made the Templars look like a bunch of whiny twits in my opinion and was a failure as far as I was concerned.

How did they lose? They ended up driving off the Orks and started rebuilding etc. Sounds like a win to me.
OT Galaxy in Flames is one of my fav books so will probably have to be that, but its too close really. Now if you had asked it would have to be the BA series by James Swallow or the DOW series.

Nope. They win Rynn's World, even if they take massive casualties due to a torpedo misfire.
I liked the story of Rynn's World plenty, and the characters were decent Space Marine hero-types. As a Crimson Fists player, I also had some attachment to the narrative. Unfortunately, it's like reading the second draft of a novel. There are so many spelling and grammar mistakes in it that it hurts my eyes. There are often multiple errors per page, and you'll rarely go more than six or seven pages before you hit another. I know I get on the cases of folks over here for bad grammar, but in a mass market novel that's actually sold for money, it's unacceptable.
