I am planning on buying about 300$ worth of Imperial guard today. I need help making sure i am getting the right stuff. any sugestions will help. I am planning on pairing them with grey knights for now. The grey knights i have are:
1: Draigo
15: Palidain/terminators (hammers and cannons.)
2: Autocannon Dreadnaughts
1: land Raider or redeemer.

my thought was something like this. i feel like grey knights are very cold to flyers. something like this:
Imperial Guard-
Hq-ministorum priest-45 w/squad
Troop-Infantry Platoon/Chimera-85
Troop-Infantry Platoon/Chimera-85
Fast Attack-1 Vendetta w/Heavy bolters-140
Fast Attack-1 Vendetta w/Heavy bolters-140
Fast Attack-1 Vendetta w/Heavy bolters-140

Grey Knights-
Hq-

I know that I am doing it wrong somehow. any help would be fantastic.

biggest thing for guard when buying troops is to buy them by the battle force, You will want the heavy weapons and command squad as the basic infintry box only comes with 1 flamer, grenade launcher and plasma pistol. The sentinel you basicly get for free.

When you build the list an Infintry Platoon consists of at a minimum 1 platoon command squad and 2 Infintry Squads, read the little text in the box at the top of the page it tells you how to buy platoons. this is 1 troop choice but 3 seperate units. for less model/cheaper minimum points you can get a veteren squad (1 vet sqquad = `1 troop choice)

Priests aren't great for guard as you don't really want to be in assault any way, CCS is best all round HQ but Primeris Psycher can work and Lord Commisar has it's uses

but then you can't get the unit in a chimera. How would you get a troop choice in a chimera? what is the cheapest unit to get into a Dedicated transport? I'm basicly wanting to find the cheapest setup so i can feild 3 vendettas.

Priests can't be HQ. A CCS is a more versatile option out of the 3 choices (CCS, Lord Commissar or Primaris Psycher). Not to mention, orders are fun! If you're not using a lot of infantry then you might consider the other two. Psychers be decent, but nothing special. A fully kitted out CCS with special weapons can be devastating.
Troop-Infantry Platoon/Chimera-85

This is illegal. For a single troops choice, you need a PCS and two infantry squads. A platoon is not a squad. You can take veterans for an infantry choice though.
Fast Attack-1 Vendetta w/Heavy bolters-140

Vendettas with HBs are a little silly, would be more useful to put the HB sponsons on Valkyries with missile pods

This would be a very weak guard list. You have no special weapons and are relying entirely on the vendettas doing everything. That won't work. Everyone brings AA now, so it's likely that at least one of those will be shot out the air the turn it comes in. Put heavy weapons and special weapons in your infantry squads to drastically increase their out-put. They can shoot 5 weapons out of a chimera too. A CCS is a great investment, they can have 4 BS4 special weapons. Not including the commanding officers plasma pistol.

I'd also recommend some armour. Chimeras won't last particularly long, and guard can bring some amazing heavy armour in the form of Leman Russes or in the form of artillery. This is where most of your damage will come from in my experience. My battle tanks make their points and more over every game. Especially the LR executioner.

For grey knights I have no clue. I use my power armoured allies (SW) as a forward element while my guard sit back and gunline. Out-flankers are great in this regard, you can walk them right onto an objective. You could have the same thing with deep strikers.

This looks more like it should be an IG allies list not the main detachment. You can still take 3 vendettas in an allied list if you mistakenly think that those 3 models will win you any games.

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

Sadly the rules don't care what we want, If you want a platoon you have to buy it that way. The cheapest way to get your required 2 troops in chimeras will be 2 vet squads with chimeras.

...Second reading I think your not understanding the way a Guard Platoon works. While 1 platoon Troop FOC slot is a minimum of 1 PCS and 2 Infintry squads they are each Individual units on the table. think like how a dedicated transport and the squad you buy it for are two seperate units but only take 1 FOC slot, only guard take it a step further allowing up to 13 units + 6 dedicated Chimeras all within 1 Platoon thus 1 FOC slot, but that is only 1 Troop choice so you would still have to buy a second troop choice for a legal army
