I was wondering what the scale was for standard Guardsmen in warhammer 40k , i wanted to try and use some Kreigsmarines (http://www.dreamforge-games.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=66_68&products_id=194) As my Special Operations unit , but i'm worried about the size differnce between units . Any help out there ?

28mm is the standard size for most "Regular" warhammer models....might be wrong but I'm pretty sure

I'm using a 54 mm model for the basis of a Greater Daemon of Slaanesh but that's only cause Greater daemons are monstrous creatures

So a 31mm Base wouldn't be that much of a Differance ?

I'm taking a look at the models..and they're saying a 31mm base...I'm assuming that's the base that they're standing on

some people might have a problem playing them cause now they have a broader "interaction" zone....so say if you were playing in a tournament..you might expect some flack about it...and they could be illegal to use...actually since they're not GW models I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be tournament legal..

with saying that however it shouldn't be a problem if say you had a gaming group and everybody was cool about it

If you wanted to be safe, you could just buy some bases from GW(or a 3rd party that sells bases the exact GW size) to put these guys on.

Assuming the models themselves would be legal where you play.

Why not use GW bases? I assume that won't cause any problems?

For the record, the scale for 40k is technically 28mm heroic scale. The proportions are bit different when compared with plain-Jane 28mm scale figures.

What's the difference between heroic and "normal" 28mm scale?

The proportions are different. Heads, hands, feet, and such are usually bigger than they should be for normal human proportions. Take a look:

They're both 28mm in scale, but the Guardsman looks HUGE. This is because he's "heroic". Honestly, I think GW just made it up to make their models more beefy and macho-looking.

Heads and hands get very big in Heroic scale as the above picture demonstrates.

Weapons, too. The heroic scale weaponry is always much bigger than they would be in true scale.

I Apprecaite all of the feedback on this , so what i've gathered is either 1) make sure the larger bases are ok with your opponent or 2) just buy GW bases and affix the Kreigsmarines to them .......... Seems intresting

Its best to just hope on ebay and get the proper bases, espeacially for the heavy weapons teams. People can get right picky about that.
Love the choice of model though. Should look cool.

The only "scale" which is at all constant in 40K is base size. As mentioned anatomical scale is way off (especially heads and hands) and weapons are FAR too large. Vehicles are even worse, they are far too small. Standard marines by all rights should be the size of terminators.

No, Marines are proper size. Humans are too big.

Guardsmen should be way smaller then they are now.

And vehicles are so screwed up its not worth fixing.

Aren't GW minis also in the 1:56 scale range and 28mm?

Seeing a squad of veterens swoop in in a Vendetta, secure the area, deliver that math assignment, and extract within 2 minutes would be freaking sweet.

^ Sometimes.

Mostly, they are not. Heroic scale screws around with actual scales a lot. Also, different makers have their own views on what "28mm" means - whether to eye-level or top-of-head, for example.

Or yes that, you either "scale down" normal humans or "scale up" marines, its just easier from a modelling perspective to do the latter.
