Hi,
I'm not sure if this is in the right place so I apologise if it isn't.
Anyway, I bought my first land raider for my World Eaters the other day and as I was assembling it I realised something;
Why would anyone put the lascannons on the rear weapon mount locations when you can put them towards the front? Doing the latter would increase the weapon's range by 1.5" (not much I know but it's not the size that matters, it what you do with it lol) and give the weapons a much better line of sight.
Does anyone else have an opinion on this?
Also, from a fluff perspective, having the lascannons at the rear would mean there is a secondary disembarking hatch right in front of the lascannons. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to exit in front of a big anti tank laser.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

I put the guns at the back for the standard Phodos-pattern Land Raider because I think it looks better, but you're right that there's essentially no reason not to put them forward in game terms.

Apart from range, the only reason I can think of to specifically put them at the back would be if you want to convert your Godhammer into a Terminus Ultra. But apart from that, there's no difference really in where you place them.

In the past having the LCs in the back made it easier to fit a squad of 10/12 dudes (codex depending) within 2" of an exit. But now with the new disembark rules it's not as critical.
I do think the LCs in the back looks nicer though.

Lc in the back for looks, all other sm options in the front for effectiveness.

1.5" range isn't going to make a huge difference, especially not on lascannons that can pretty much reach out and touch anything they want on the board anyways.

its not about range, its about doors! those doors are where you exit the land raider, in addition to the front! If you put them at the front (so LC's at the back) you have a much easier time disembarking, especially big units!
*disclaimer- cannot remember differences in 6th and 5th ed disembarking, this point may now be irrelevant

You can disembark 6" now so it's not so important.

But it still gives a larger disembarkation area, it becomes important if the enemy is surrounding the tank.

One thing putting them up front gains you is a greater arc of fire. The arc where both cannons can hit the same target is larger when they are up front. Its important in the event of Immobilized results.
