With the advent of pre-measuring, is there any reason anyone would object to movement trays. As a guard player, people get antsy and bored every time I go to plop down 100 guardsmen on the table... is there anything to do to make this less painful?

Dont play guard! lol Sorry had to sayyy it.

Personally as a player I wouldnt mind. As long as the Battle line/Terrain dictated it. As soon as you start moving over hills etc Itll become boring to have to pick out on distances.

Maybe do them in small bunches, Ie 4 men per tray, then its not so bad.

That's kind of what I was thinking, If I have 4 men movement trays, then I'd be placing 25 pieces rather than 100...

Id stick with smaller movement trays. larger ones are just asking for a blast template

You could also model the trays so that each mini is 2" away from each other.

I've been thinking this myself. I play ork trukk spam and when the trukks blow up moving, positioning and assulting becomes time consuming. The issue I see in my army are as follows:

1. orks start in trukks this means disembarking eventually and something even embarking. Taking out the tray and placing models on it.

2. Terrain also composes a problem because I usually don't have room to move models in optimal unit coherency and tray is a fixed size.

3. Piling in. This extra movement in asault which is easy to do normally becomes an issue.

If you guard blobs don't move or assault you'll have less problems than I but then again if you don't is it too much a hazzle just to postiong your model at begin and leave it at that?

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

Well I am considering Litko's four man horde trays/ 6 man skirmish trays. This allows me to space them out when i need to by leaving blanks as well as puting them tightly packed. Having a max of 4 per tray, allows the unit to still change forms when moving and to meet the terrain needs presented.

Also the other big thing is, my armies are magnetized, so it really is a time saver, in that they will be set in the trays in my storage box, and simply plopped down as is.

With regard to assaulting, this happens once or so per guard unit (they are fragile enough) so to have them leave the tray when an assault is declared is no big deal. The end result is still a lot of saved time, and after the assault, what's left shouldn't be too tedious to move individually.

What do you guys think of litko's trays/ alternative trays? Edit: Back to Base IX look great too, already magnetized

You think movement trays are a good idea. Then you will post later how unfair template and blast weapons are...

Like i said, I can leave spaces in the tray so that my men are spread out when needed...

Given how terrain works, they really won't work. You would end up with the tray interfering with movement rather then helping.

This.

As soon as you reach a bit of terrain that requires you to break your movement tray formation, you'll not only be hating the movement trays, but they'll start arguments about how your are moving off the tray and back onto it (remember - you'll need to have the necessary movement to get all of your guys back into the correct holes in the tray when getting back on it after breaking formation to squeeze through a gap in some ruins).

Movement trays make sense in Fantasy because terrain doesn't affect the game the same way it does in 40k. They work in 40k on a blank board. As soon as you start adding terrain to the mix, it no longer works.

I wasn't very clear, I meant, when I hit terrain, its time for an assault, the tray is gone for good, they'll leave it and that will be that. its just an early game time saving mechanism?

Yes, it works. I have a couple of friends who used them as timesavers with their horde guard armies in 5th. Mostly for deployment and the first turn or two of movement, terrain permitting.
