I just finished these this morning, its the full unit except I intend on modifying a Lysander model just in case the Lightning Claw Sergeant doesn't work out.

Commander Farsight (Who I like to call Nearsight) is a Forgeworld Shas'o R'myr I converted.

Ok, I will bite, I don't understand how these units go togather because the colors don't tie them togather.

Eastern Frontier Exploratores

628th Praetorian Guard Cohort (wife's army)
827th Auxilia Cohort (ad mech fun)

For P&M purposes the colors don't match.
Other than that, You seem to have okay brush control. I assume all of your Tau are bluish grey. Farsight could use alight wash/weathering I think.

EDIT: I saved the mods the trouble of deleting everything I wrote and replacing it with red text. 99% of it had nothing to do with P&M.

@Fafnir thanks for calling that out.

Honestly, that's just uncalled for.

It's an odd combination from a fluff standpoint (but then again, this looks a lot closer to "counts as Farsight" than it does to "Farsight), but gameplay is gameplay, and GW allows for stranger combinations.

As far as the paintjob is concerned, the base tones don't match, but that may be intentional, based on the colours of each detachment. Your paints are too thick, consider watering them down, and I'd recommend finishing your models with a wash to bring out the details, and then some highlights. You're off to a solid start.

I can see that you've attempted to do some freehanding, especially on the shoulders of your terminators. That's pretty brave, and I commend that, but I'd suggest slowing down and focusing on the basics before you go back into something as intricate as freehanding. Work on building up tones and highlights, improve your brush control and then worry about freehand.

For your basing, I would suggest against using the mixed black gravel, since it looks so close to the base and makes the model look poorly flocked from afar. Perhaps add some larger stones too, to liven things up.

Wow, tough crowd...... I'd like to note that my camera flash ruined a lot of detail in the picture, but I had to use it due to lighting issues in the room. Perhaps I should get some better lighting and take pictures of each model individually?

Sharkvictim wrote:I assume all of your Tau are bluish grey. Farsight could use alight wash/weathering I think.
Yes they are, and I did do a wash on that model...I'll admit it doesn't show much though.

Yes it is intentional based on the colours of each detachment. My Tau were already started in the blue and white before Allies rules came out, which basically left Ultramarines for an SM matching color choice....I have a particular dislike of Ultramarines.
Fafnir wrote:Your paints are too thick, consider watering them down,
I'm not sure where you are coming from with this honestly, some of my paints that I used on these models are so thin that they flow like water.

Uhm....I don't freehand. I'm sorry that Ironhand Chapter Transfers look bad? I guess?

I can see where you are coming from concerning the flocking, I was going for an "Alien beach" theme with the basing as the fluff I was working on for my Tau involves them being from a mostly oceanic planet, I'm personally fairly happy with it though.

Work in progress, haven't had the chance to type it all up yet.

Yeah, idky everyone's being harsh, it's a decent paint job. Maybe they're mad because terminators are escorting a Tau, I really have no idea.

I think the Terminators need some highlighting on the black and the silver bits could use a wash. Can't really see the Tau guy, but he looks good from a distance; he could maybe use some highlighting as well, though.

As for the basing, it doesn't look "alien" to me. It looks like un-painted aquarium gravel.

Well, that's one way for Farsight to get some close combat effectiveness! Especially without any homeworld help.

I think they came out great. Nice clean paint job.
My only recommendations would be a bit of drybrushing on the termi's to pop the details a bit more. Same for Farsight, just so you can see the armor plates. If it's too much on the drybrushing, a wash can tone it down. The hammers look good, perhaps a wash to deepen the look.

You may have done that, and then the flash took it out. If that's the case, just back up a bit with the camera and zoom in a little then take the pic if still needing the flash.

Regardless, Good job!

I think they came out nicely. It's a simple paint job that focuses on being clean and I think it accomplishes that pretty well. I would look at doing some highlights to give them a little definition, maybe give the metal bits on the termies another wash before highlighting them. The basing is solid.

Maybe some shots of the commander on its own as well? He seems to look nice but the termies are a bit in the way.

Just so everyone knows....This is a terrible idea from a gameplay perspective, I've used it four times now and it just doesn't work.

Though Farsight's paint job and conversions did get me extra points in our tournament last week .

Wait what... how does a tau go with terminators? Are the termies proxies?

Heresy : P You should definitely post some reps or rounds where you used it.

Battle Brothers, Farsight's weapon is S5+2D6+5 Armour Penetration with four attacks, the Terminators are more or less there to keep him from dying, as I point out below though...It just doesn't work in a Deep Striking format.

darkcloud92 wrote:Heresy : P You should definitely post some reps or rounds where you used it.

Don't need to, when the unit deep strikes they immediately get shot to hell in the next turn because they cant drop and assault in the same turn. The only way I can think of to make this work is to put the Terminators in a Land Raider and have Farsight follow behind it until they come out, which just isn't worth it to me considering points cost. To put the rounds in simple terms though:
Round 1 vs Daemons: Deep Strike Mishap, Rolled a 1. -_-
Round 2 vs Tau w/DA: Plasma'ed to death before getting hit with a Relic Blade in Challenge.
Round 3 vs Necrons: Dropped in, had two die to shooting, killed a Lord and two Wraiths, game end.

Yeah, I think that the slapdowns you received earlier were massively unfair, I really don't see the paint being too thick on these guys. I, personally, feel that the bases need a little work, and also that some highlighting with a light grey would really help those dark colours pop better. BUT, don't intepret these as criticisms, think of them more as ways to add improvements to what, in my opinion, is a nice solid job of painting.

If you put those down on the table against me, I would be impressed, and happy that my opponent had taken the time to actually paint up his army to a decent standard.

And lastly, that comment re the freehanding of what was obviously a transfer... No idea where the poster got that idea, they are good looking transfers.
