How likely would it be that GW has upper echelons secretly disguised as loyal Dakka members ferreting out opinions on products? (ie, 40k 6th edition codex, Dark Vengeance, new Chaos line etc)

This pretty much sums it up. They do have some folks who read forums and read what's going on though, even if it doesn't always appear they listen. It's one of the ways they ferret out leaks and the like.
