Subject: Necron Monolith a lame duck?
|
 |
Pulsating Possessed Chaos Marine

Hey all. I am in need of advice on the Necron Monolith. I love the model and have plans of running two in tandem. One starts on the board and the other deepstrikes in. Plan to use them as portals for warrior blobs.
Seeing as Ive yet to play a game of 6th edition and reading all of the "vechiles sux" threads, I have become a bit worried as to the viability of the unit. Im not running a tourney list, but i dont want the monoliths easily wiped off the table.
Is anyone still running one or two or perhaps three monoliths in semi competitive or casual lists? How do you run them?
Thanks in advance.

Vehicles don't suck, not relative to other things in 6th ed.
The problem with the monolith isn't a problem with the monolith, it's a problem with everything else. The other necron vehicles are SO GOOD, why bother with that old relic?

THey look aweosme, and have a sweet fluff. Just run em, no reason you can't win with those in your lists.

Its AV14 which means str8 needs 6's to glance and you need str9+ to get a pen so against your average MeQ army it wont die that quickly.
If your facing eldar or dark eldar though the lance rules means it'll die quite fast.
Its no longer immune to melta but these days most run plasma anyway.
It really depends what your local meta is.
It does however pack alot of punch with the whip easily able to slaughter troops caught out in the open and as its artillery it will break other vehicles aswell.

They did, at the start of 6th ed, everyone felt the same as you do, then the 6th ed BRB FAQ hit, and that was taken away. Was a happy day for many.
Check the FAQ, heavy skimmer doesn't get jinks save.

The model is cool; that's worth half the cost right there. It's also tough as a brick, and blocks LOS better than any model in the game. and Flux arc's aren't bad, let alone terrible. And the particle whip is sweet.
The monolith gives you a bubble on the board worth about 30 inches of interdiction for MEQ and vehicles, blocks line of sight and most importantly looks awesome.
OP: If you think the model is cool you'd be correct cause it is. Get two and report back when they get you your first win.

Monoliths are the lame duck of the Necron Heavy slot. It's big, slow, lost old living metal and can't re-roll RP or pull units out of combat. There's some utility with reserves manipulation and teleporting, but the price is simply too high both in terms of points and opportunity cost.
If you're dead set on running them, you have 2 AV14 walls with decent infantry killing and some limited utility with teleporting. Melta, lances and haywire will destroy you handily, so bring protection (Wraiths, Scarabs, allies). Has potential in a midfield control set up
At 1850 you could run something like the following
Destroyer Lord w/ scythe, sempiternal weave, scarabs
4x 5 Warriors in Scythes
6 Wraiths
2x6 Scarabs
2 Monoliths
3 Tomb Spyders
Run your canopteks behind the Monowall until the Scythes arrive to shred infantry and light armor. Any problems get mobbed up on by scarabs, wraiths and spyders. Teleport as needed, try to control midfield.

Wow, a bunch of good replies, thanks guys. Yea most of the reason for me running them is just because i love the model. The only fear i had was how easy they were to wreck. So how would one go about keepingthem up and running for at least a turn or two vs dark eldar or other av14 poppers? Hiding them doesnt really work sooooooooooooo, tomb spiders maybe?

If you love the model, put it on a base like a piece of scenery and use it as a Necron bastion. The model is sweet, but the rules eat a hot bag of dicks, making it a total waste of a Heavy slot.

General rule is, that when you love a model and just get it up, its going to immediately die in the first few games. Play a few games, eventually it will see the later turns.

The monolith is a iconic 40k unit and its what drew me to playing nercons but I admit my Monolith never gets used. Since the Monolith cost so much you will have to build your list around them.
It has 4 hulls point and Av14 is is still tough expect to metla/Lance/CC Armourbane, though it is a huge fire magnet.
You could use this as a diversion tactic and take tactical advantage of your opponents. Remember it is super slow! 6'' per turn and with only 24'' range it can be difficult to be where you want to be and big such a huge model it also can't be expected to fix everywhere. of course you can use this again to your advantage, a LOS blocking movable terrain place, backed up by Ghost arcs, you can shut off whole areas of the board and make low strength shooting useless.
Tomb Spyders make an excellent body guard / repair unit. 3 MC and maybe even a Scarab swarm should be able to keep most enemy players out of metla/CC range of the Mono.

Living Metal used to do that, but now it's really watered down.
You can still do well if you run Monoliths, but it's definitely not optimal and they won't perform as well as something like an Annihilation Barge, which also costs less than half the points to field. That said I love Monoliths, and I field it whenever I can.

The Monolith is currently useful based on your local meta game. I noticed at our first 6th edition tournament that anyone who brought Armour 14 tanks would probably have excelled, but no one brought any.

Vehicles are still very good in 6th, especially av 14 ones. Because of the increase in infantry people are bringing less anti AV weapon. I have been playing tau with two hammerheads and finding people are ill prepared to deal with front armor 13. Many people think they will just shoot at your back with bolters and glance you to death but that rarely ever works out.

Have to agree with this...vehicles don't suck, they've been balanced out more...

Necron Vehicles are pretty good. Quantum shielding makes them AV13. I can definitely see a AV13 list in the distant future due to the amount of options available in the Necron Codex.

There is only one type of Monolith, but that was its Gate of Eternity or whatever it's called -- it can pull Necron units around the board, or it can vacuum some close-range units in to a pocket dimension.

Ah right, well it teleported into one of the best places for vacuuming (like a dyson) most if not all of one my tactical squads...my tactical error!
