Lost in a blizzard, somewhere near Toronto

Hope all our Dakka members out on our west coat are okay tonight.

A magnitude 7.7 quake hit BC about 123 miles south-southwest of Prince Rupert, at a depth of 6.2 miles.

What's really interesting about this is that this event might offer up confirmation to a recent theory about the entire Ring of Fire being linked by big earthquakes. Over the past decade, there have been large to catastrophic quakes on the western cost of South America, New Zeland & of corse Japan.

Yeah, by and large BC is tusnami-proof.

Something like 95% of the coastal population is shielded from the open Pacific by a huge fething island, so we tend to just shrug at tsunami warnings.

50% of the province lives in Vancouver, which is on the mainland right at the 49th parallel on the coast, completely shielded by an island the size of cuba.

The norther coastal towns have maybe ten people living in them, collectively.

I almost always agree with Albatross, I can't see why anyone wouldn't.

Okay, so the male version of "Cougar" is now officially "Albatross".

BC quakes also tend not to generate a large tsunami because the majority of the quakes are a strike-slip action, which is a horrizontal grinding similar to what happens along the San Andreas fault in California. Only the plates themselves are moving, rather than actually displacing the water.

To get that monster tsunami, you need a vertical displacement which tends to happen with subduction actions which are more often the case in areas like Japan.

Luckily the quake hit well north of any major population areas, because the focus was fairly shallow.

BC may be Tsunami proof but one day a gigantic earthquake will obliterate Vancouver off the map.

Its hardly noticeable, for me it felt like too much coffee jitters, didn't realize it was earthquake till I got home and saw the news.
