So I have just found out that my local GW will now be closed on a monday / tuesday and open normal times every other day except thursday which will be from 12 - 8 pm. I heard there was a trial and it seems to be rolling out everywere now.

I am pretty pissed as late night gaming used to go to 10 pm and now it will be almost impossible for me to get games at my local GW and I could not find any local gaming clubs.

I have to wonder if your local store will have gaming after hours available, but close all registers at 8pm?

The LGS where I am has late night gaming on friday night, usually 4-5 hours after the listed closing time. And actually, depending on who is working, and what his mood is, you may be able to make a midnight purchase there.

It has been like that for years now in the states. I don't see the problem. They don't open? Go game somewhere else.

In most places in the uk there is nowhere else if theres no local club as GW did a very good job of crushing the majority of independents over the last 2 decades.

Your last point is especially laughable and comical, because not only the 7th ed Valkyrie shown dumber things (like being able to throw the troopers without parachutes out of its hatches, no harm done) - Irbis

Presumably a lot of the other folk using the store will be in the same situation

Group together and see if you can get a club going (or see if any of them have access to an alternate venue)

Its an Games workshop and thats the listed hours for our gaming date only 12 - 8 pm on Thursday.

I only know a few others and I believe they go to a gaming club some way away but most of them drive and transport late at night would be an issue for me as I live far from most of them.

I've searched online for local gaming clubs and I just cant find any that exist near the Uxbridge area in West London. So I guess I am confined to only going to Games workshop on a saturday.

Might be worth using Dakka's Find A Game section to find other places to play then.

Sucks that they're reducing hours like that, I feel sorry for the staff. I suspect that they'll be getting a fairly hefty pay cut because of this. Maybe not, but best case scenario they'll be working every weekend.

No.

Mixture of high costs and typically small floor space is the reason why there aren't that many independents, well that and the recession.

My local GW has had these opening times and been closed mon/tue for ages. We used to have four staff working there and it was open everyday and did gaming until 10 pm. Now there is only 1 guy working there who is frequently late (I've been left waiting outside for him to arrive 30 mins after "opening" time on a few occasions). Fortunately there is a local gaming club nearby and some of my friends play so we meet up at each others houses too.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

Brunel gamers is a computer games club for people who attend the university ....

Central london wargames club is no use that would mean travel by tube and late at night probably once again and is not even close to being local.

Also they dont even seem to have Warhammer 40k listed on there website which is the main game that I play.

So much for my search FU being weak ... dude you need to read properly IMHO

Also If I was not clear by NEAR uxbridge I meant like 15 - 30 mins away. The second would take me atleast 40 mins +.

Assuming you're Uxbridge London from the tube comment, not Uxbridge oop north, then how about Heroes and Legends?

www.heroesandlegendsgames.com

Might be more convenient for you. Good range of minis and good discount too, my friend buys for me by proxy through them as he lives nearby. Says they're really nice guys too.

Well when there's only one guy to run the store they sort of have to for their break.
One around here has had those hours and closed for lunch since they moved to their current location a bit over a year ago.

I've found that GW stores around the UK all have their own opening times dependent on location and staff.

My local GW in Brierley Hill (the 'Dudley' store) opens and closes with the Merry Hill shopping center because it has to, it's part of the lease policy of most Westfield located stores. So from November they open until 10pm, and later leading up to Christmas.

SeanDrake wrote:

Do you REALLY think that?
Most independent stores in the UK don't stock GW products and don't regard GW as their direct competitor. The main competitor for independent stores is Amazon, and possibly Toys 'R' Us whose mass market family board games drown out better games that small stores have to offer.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

I am talking about Uxbridge tube station on the Piccadilly line

Also that Heroes and legends is located in :

289 Ewell Road, Surbiton, KT6 7AB,

Thats EVEN further away than the last suggestion .... Would be over 1 hour 20 by car with traffic with no local tube station and I do not drive.

I live actually near Greenford tube station on the central line - UB5 post code so something closer to there would be great but there doesnt seem to be anything closest thing I know of.

Closest I have so far is darksphere gaming in Central london by the London eye which is a awkward especially with having to take my case on Tube and you can only play 40k certain days / times to my knowledge etc.

All I know is that you're 30mins odd out of Uxbridge. For all I know, it's in the direction of Surbiton, which is only 45mins from Uxbridge. I used to take an hour and fifteen minute bus to get a game in, so that doesn't seem like all that much to me. No need to get shirty, I'm just trying to help.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ah, edited post comes across less angry. I'm afraid that's where my knowledge of the area ends. From where you actually are, that would probably take quite a trek to get to. You'd be looking at overground trains rather than tube, but even then, probably about 1h30m minimum I reckon.

Right, but they never used to have only one staff member. They'd always be two at least, often three. I was just playing with the thought that the lunch breaks (which wasn't the point) and the opening hours could be related due to some cut backs or whatever.

But thank you anyway.

Yes, but you didn't adequately acknowledge his sense of entitlement.

How dare you suggest he might have to travel if he wants a game. I'm pretty sure the GW (and you by answering his whining) have an obligation to provide him a gaming experience at his convenience.

Shame on you!
