This topic is a whole can of worms, believe me. From what I've seen, the overall community of 40k-ers ( ) is split right down the middle with regards to Dawn of War. Roughly half prefer the giant, strategy-oriented battles of the first four Dawn of War games. The other half prefers the smaller, more tactics-oriented skirmishes of Dawn of War II. Personally, while I enjoyed both, I definitely had more fun playing the first Dawn of War games. That's not to say that Dawn of War II is bad, but it's a wholly different game than Dawn of War.

Do you like RTS games like StarCraft or the like? Go for Dawn of War. Prefer games like Company of Heroes (also made by Relic, incidentally) with smaller army sizes and more tactics? Go for Dawn of War II.

Vanilla DoW2 is nice but a bit boring in the long run IMHO.
There are very few (3?) types of missions that you play over and over (and over and over and over and over and over) again.
Retribution is much better in that regard.

Good things are good,.. so it's good

Don't compare the DoW games to the codices. You'll be screaming at the screen, for missing options for one thing.

But, as video games go, they're pretty good.
As said Dow and Dow2 are totally different.
Dow is more like C&C and its ilk, and DOW2 as more of a combat game with less strategy.

There a loads of mods for Dow, such as Spacehulk.
Dow2 has are free/cheap multi-player versions.

For me, the solo campaigns of the 3 Dow2 games have more replayability.

The Dawn of War 2 engine is substantially improved over DoW1. You might have difficulty playing the original DoW1, or maybe it was just widescreen that was a problem when I tried to play it again a year or two ago.

Might pay to check pcgamingwiki.com for info on how well the originals run.

dawn of war 1 was better IMO. the voice acting for the marines was really cool.

DOW2 is a mediocre RPG and a mediocre strategy game rolled into one making a pretty crap boring game. its fun for a day or so.

Dawn of War 2 is a significantly more tactical game than Dawn of War 1, and your unit choices matter a lot more. Heavy bolters won't eventually bring down a Leman Russ, the facing of your units actually matters, as does cover and the interactive environment. Unfortunately the multiplayer scene is all but dead, and the skirmish AI is garbage. You may be able to find some AI mods out there, however, and the single player campaign is still very fun. The majority of players who were dissatisfied with it were mostly upset that they didn't get the same game with better graphics and instead got something innovative and different. I still enjoy DoW1 and it's definitely partially responsible for getting me into 40k, but nostalgia aside I can recognize that DoW2 is the superior game.

Dawn of War 2 is thrash to be perfectly honest. Pick it up from steam when it's 75% off.

The original is much better.

Dawn of War 2 is a far superior game. It has better production values across the board. The only reason why people don't like it as much was previously stated, it's a matter of taste of RTS. If you like intricate tactics, Dawn of War 2 is way up your alley. If you prefer "classic RTS" gameplay with resources and building construction and big battles, Dawn of War 1 is the game. However, Dawn of War 1 is out-dated (well of course, it originally came out in 2004) in everything it does, and it really hasn't aged well.

It depends on what you look for in a 40k RTS. It's tactical and really resembles a small game of 40k on the tabletop. You'll only get 10-15 troops and a few support weapons at most before you've hit your production limit.

I personally prefer my 40k to be massive in scale, so appreciated the much larger battles of DoW1.

Preferred Dow 1 as did most people as you can see with the amount of support in expansions and the huge modding community that is still alive today.
Dow 2 has less then half the amount of maps and factions, making it rather repetitive and the AI is terrible, unlike Dow 1 AI that regularly gives you a run for your money.
Relic has no more planned support for Dow 2, so we will never get the other races added :( Through it is worth a week or two of fun regardless.

Why not have both, grand strategy but with more tactical depth? Copy paste of my old post:

Now that looks fun! It's a shame you can't do all the base building stuff as well though. Can you play with the Nids or just against them? Where did you get the mod for the population cap?

I honestly found the best part of the first couple to be the banter between commanders as you raided their HQ territory.

Especially when Goregutz said:
"Wat? I coudn't 'ehe on account 'o all the hot airs youz blowin".

after Caerys finished her monologue.

You can play as Nid, SM, IG, Eldar, Orks and CSM if you have the expansions.

The original DoW lacked Nid but had DE, Sisters, Necron (4th ed), and Tau.

Also, be weary of playing on "Hard". The computer will actually cheat. A single base will be stomping around with 3-4 HQ's -_-'.

I thought Dawn of War 2 was fun, but I think the original, despite its faults, was more fun and a better game.

Dawn of War 2 had a very bizarre difficulty curve, and ultimately, felt "Less 40K" than the original due to its limited scale and scope. Character-driven RTS games also aren't among my favorites.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

The tone also felt more...off in DoW2. The Space Marines in DoW1 were very "Cleanse/Purge/Kill" and monkish, very super-soldier-y. In DoW2 they were more generic action heroes which took away a lot.

this.

if you wanna see how crap and broken DOW2 is, max the difficulty.

after awhile i didnt bother making any troops as theyre worthless. all you need to win is your special characters and their cheeseball abilities combined with the dumbass AI = game over.
