Obviously there is a big difference between the two. Which do you prefer, why and for what?

I think it really depends on the role you want them to fill both have advantages and disadvantages.

The Daemon DP is usually a little cheaper, and better at shooting. Also has EW and is scoring in some missions.

The CSM DP, is a little more killy in CC, and can be a beast with Psychic powers.

Well this was more of a poll to get a feel for how other people like to use them. In 5th I would use a nurgle DP from daemons as a CC monster that never died. Ive never used a CSM prince and was wondering why anyone would? I am still learning 6th ed.

Well, the DP in the CSM codex can be a beast in cc if equipped correctly. The downside is that he's not an EW.
The DP in the Daemon codex is much less killy and EW. They will fill different roles.
You have to build a list around the CSM DP, but not around the Daemon DP.

The Daemon DP also can Skyfire. While the CSM has the ability to, there are no ranged options for him. Str 8 AP 1 Bolt can do some damage to flyers.

The CSM prince is MUCH killier on melee actually, due to his massive WS, I, and the ability to equip the Black Mace. We are talking taking out TH/SS terminator squads in one turn killy. However, a single vindicator or railgun can kill him. As such, you use the DP an extremely mobile deathstar breaker unit. Pretty much any unit that's not all equipped with Force/ID weapons will lose to a Black Mace DP. The loss of EW is not really a problem in CC, as the DP will generally kill everything before they get to hit back, and generally wont get to wound you anyway.

Obviously, it's so expensive that you need to make sure to know to get him to combat safely, and design your list to support him, and take down enemy Vindicators at turn one.

On the other hand, the Daemon DP is much more like the original CSM DP, though more expensive, with a bit more options. With EW, he pretty much has the ability to float around the battlefield, hunting down tanks and expensive units, but not really killy enough to take down real deathstars. Think of him like a lesser Bloodthirster.

Chaos Daemon's Bolt of Tzeentch isn't a beam weapon. Also, Chaos Daemons don't have psychic tests.

I think that CSM is more assault killy with Black Mace and better assaulting stats. Also, Gift of Mutation can help some of the time.

With Daemons Breath of Chaos, Bolt of Tzeentch, and Paven of Slaanesh, they are more of a support/annoyance unit. With wings, Vector Strike and Breath of Chaos for marine killing. Paven to support any template or blasts. Bolt of Tzeentch for pot shots at flyers.
