You can still eat crap and be thin so long as you're active enough to use up those calories, what's really causing obesity is a combination of inactivity and bad diets.

Well, if we want to really go down this road:

Italy wins Ice Cream
German wins beer
Switzerland wins watches
Scotland wins whisky (or whiskey if you prefer)

...and 'Murica wins in trucks

let them come, I honestly prefer a good single malt to a blend, Irish, Bourbon, or Kentucky whiskey.

Although, I think we also win here in America with historical celebrities... I mean, it's hard to beat quotes from Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, Samuel Colt and the like

I don't know. I'm not too familiar with whisky.

lets add a few.
Tequila: Mexico (derp derp!)
Rum: dark: Jamaica/Grenada
Rum: light: Spanish Carribean
Vodka: Russia (In Stalinist Russia, you don't drink vodka, vodka drinks you!) except for Titos - go Austin!

Well, there you go then.

The Scilly Isles have a population of not much over 2,000 and the entire United States just matches their beer output variety.

I think no more comment is needed here.

Part 1: I genuinely prefer corn mash bourbons to single malts; it's a matter of personal taste. It's like coke and pepsi except in this case mine is cheaper than yours too :p

Part 2: I can think of more interesting historical celebrities than all of those both American and otherwise.

Not really, we spent some time talking about it in my high school AP English class. There were 2-3 writers at the time who wrote almost exactly the same material and style he did. Considering how much political clout Shakespeare had at the time, it wasn't far fetched for these writers to have donned him as a moniker to escape persecution for their satirical views of the king at the time - an offense that could get your head chopped off.

I'm just joking, I just irks me a bit to see all these "my nation has a bigger dick than yours" -type comments, like you can somehow measure that just say you like your country and leave it that. You're not well traveled or experienced enough to know what the greatest nation is (Canada

obviously) besides every country has it's pros and cons (except Afghanistan it only has cons).

We could have had British culture, French Cuisine, and American technology. Instead we ended up with American culture British Cuisine and French Technology.

Multi authorship is an even smaller fringe than anti-Stratford theories. What you are talking about has the same scholarly support as the aliens built the pyramids theory.
Good luck with that.

Not really. There's some theories that basically run on 'we don't know that much so let's make some gak up for fun' but that's about it.

But I agree that Twain was a remarkable writer. The combination of wit and social conscience is a powerful thing. And to bring it back to the original topic, Twain is one of many great American writers. The US in general has its cultural achievements ignored, in part because everyone (Americans included) seems to love bashing the crappiest parts of American culture. But amidst the constant stream of terrible stuff there's also a steady release of great works of art, and great artists, and most of them are uniquely American artists.

Could Mark Twain have been anything but an American? What about Cormac McCarthy? Or Truman Capote?

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

This is a really good example of why you shouldn't just accept stuff you learned in highschool.

'Escaping persecution' just doesn't make sense. The plays weren't written, then distributed in secret. They were performed, the people involved in performing and financing the plays were known. They were in public by the sheer nature of putting on a play for the public. To think that the performers would perform the work of playwrights who were afraid to put their name to the work makes little sense. To think that the king might crack down on the performers, but have no means to discover the original author of the work... when he's got all these actors and stage hands under arrest makes absolutely none at all.

There's also the problem that Shakespeare's plays were written to support the existing monarchy. What is Richard II but a politcal attack on an old monarch, designed to shore up the present lineage?

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another.
