I'd guess the pipe set is cast resin (so moulds that wear out, hands on care needed to cast),

and a lot of the buildings are laser cut mdf/foam which may be cheaper (and will need less hands on time, once the cutter has been programmed)

That would explaij! The painted picture looks rather like lasercut terrain to me but perhaps I'm mistaken.

Yes I'm pretty certain its laser cut stuff!!
Also with regards to pricing, as an Australian I can tell you it is exponentially cheaper terrain than what GW sells their stuff for here. I would assume that the pricing is made to compete with the Australian market, but I have been wrong before.

No, they're laser cut like the rest of the new terrain from these guys. I believe their older stuff was done on a router, but they appear to have switched to a laser to allow for more fine detail.

Wow. Not bad.
I thought that PVC pipe was more expensive.
Also, I was thinking about "modeling" supplies, not plumbing supplies. I was thinking, "I know how expensive these ILTTLE tubes are, I can only imagine how expensive 40mm (?) tubes would be!" LOL

Panic wrote:yeah,
Actually the pipe system is a little meh once you see the actual product...

Panic..

I disagree. I think the pic makes them look really nice. Far better than the Elven terrain looks in their pics.

What about "40mm tubes not included" was unclear?
And first time someone called terrain made from toilet paper rolls painted grey and rusty "all tech and shiney"

Anyway:
Seems these new Elven terrain releases are inspired by these three recent predecessors:

Actaully, pretty sure it is cut on a CNC machine with a bit vs a laser. Which accounts for them to be able to do recessed work on this eldar piece: http://www.miniaturescenery.com/ProductPage.asp?Code=ELVDAIS1 or the edge work on this stuff http://www.miniaturescenery.com/CategoryPage.asp?CODE=CAT_STB

We have been using a good bit of this stuff for a number years on some of the AdeptiCon table sets. It has held up well and I recommend it.

Mind if I chime in here? Up until very recently, all of the CNC workshop terrain has been router cut, and this has severely limited the levels of detail possible, and perceived value of the product. As the designer of said product I'm very happy to say the a Laser has been purchased and that I'm currently in the process of updating the designs to incorporate more fiddly bits an fun stuff, and adding things like engraved details to larger surfaces. The Pipes will be better.

So. Any questions?

...Yeah, better than the eldar stuff, but still, at that price? it just doesn't look like all that much wood to me and $40 US buys quite a bit of other wooden terrain nowadays.

@Mousemuffins
hmm, convince me I think there's potential in the kit and so I'd be at least somewhat interested in the pipe kit; do you have pictures of the actual plates sold? maybe I'm just guesstimating it wrong and it's more wood than it seems to be to me
Really, get a few pictures of those new sand buildings posted on the forum linked earlier on here; if the prices on those are anything like the prices on the current sand buildings set it could be quite interesting to more than a few people here. *those* really look quite promising on all possible fronts

Well, in regards to the pipes, There is rather a lot of material on the box sections, which rather drives the price up a bit. However, with the change to laser, I have about 50% more space, so will be adding significantly to what you get for your money. I can't show you the new layout yet, as I'm still working on it, but things like the smaller pipes are more detailed, there's engraved bolts around the phalanges, finer railing/ ladders, engraved hazard stripes and signs, and that before I start to use the extra space.

Here's some pictures of the new sci-fi buildings, which are built on the same chassis as the sand huts, but with more stuff:

...that's just one building from three different angles.

Here's a bunch o' buildings with some walkways and some extras thrown in:

In addition to being modified with specific parts to make the more sci-fi, each building will come with all of the following pieces to dress them up with. (This will also be available separately)

Keep in mind we haven't even done a test run on these, but I expect pricing to be *about* $30 -$35 per building.

We'll still be doing the basic sandhuts, slightly improved and with the spikey palisades included for about the same price they are now.

hmm, with your conversion to € system that does get slightly more expensive than I expected. still within affordable though, I'd agree.
it's definately more in the "I'd have to think hard about it" range, but it's fair
Is AU post or whatever you use really that much more expensive than what Americans pay to ship via USPS though? that currency conversion thing you've got going is nasty and the combined "real" shipping charge it adds has really, really put me off of ordering something before twice already, I believe (having just a dim memory of that website, sort of ). If it really is that expensive I guess there's not much to be done about it, but at some point you'd have to consider snailfreighting a bunch of your more popular kits off of that island of yours off to civilization, or getting someone else with a laser (they exist, I'm sure! ) to do some sort of exchange thing with him cutting for you and vice versa or sth like it; the shipping almost doubles prices and then there's still customs to fear. While production of laser cut stuff really isn't all that hard to replicate, AFAIK?

really, every time I see that price in $ I'm like "yeah, I want some of that!" and then shipping shock hits :/

Wood, even laser-cut wood, is never going to compete with plastic or resin for detail. Within those limitations, this stuff looks pretty good, especially if details are added or (especially for Fantasy) texture is added for that millennia-old-artefacts look.

Presuming 40mm is a standard PVC pipe size, then that's really good design, letting customers make pipe segments as long as they need.

Hi guys. Just thought I'd let you know, the first two sci-fi buildings are now available to order, along with some bridges to link them together, and a Buggy to park out front.

The new terrain looks great, but I'm a bit confused by some of the bundles in the store. A few of the bundle sets are more expensive that buying their constituent kits separately (for example, the various tool/paint rack combos).

Is this a currency conversion issue, or is shipping more expensive with the larger bundles?
