Subject: The Hobbit - What impact will it have on LOTR?
I was wandering, With the hobbit coming out on the 13th of December. Firstly, will you be going and seeing it? I know I will And secondly, what impacts do you think this'll have on the game? new box-set? new models? new rules?
I love the rules as they are now, well thought out and in many aspects so simple! by far my favourite gaming system, it's just a shame hardly anyone else knows how to play/ wants to play it :(
Discuss what the impacts the hobbit will do for LOTR strategy battle game.
I already have my tickets for the film booked and am planning to watch all three of the trilogy on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. It'll be a good week.
As I'm led to believe, there will be a new box-set as soon as next month. I hope it means that the new box-set means new players for the game. I really hope that the game system isn't altered in any way.

Draw more undesirebals into the game, and further plunge it down into the dark abyss infested with teenagers.
Hopefuly the movie will be a major catashtropy, and such hinder any great change. My current Lotr gaming scene is already bad enough with god knows how many would be elfs and Aragorns running around.
But if by some divine miracel this fails to happen and the rules are somewhat okay I suppose it will boost the amount of players, and drive some like myself away from the game until the fasion dies of. The only thing I dare hope for is new models for the Cave Trolls.

Hopefully it will reinvigorate interest in the game as well as gain some new people, although to be honest I can't see it actually having that much of an impact.
I'm interested to see what new stuff might await however there's no need to change the rules in any way in my opinion they are pretty much perfect already...
Lotr sbg/Wotr Mordor army ~ - 2000pts.
High elf/eagle army (hobbit) ~ 1600pts. WIP.

I'm afraid, very afraid....
You wanna know why ? Because they renamed it the hobbit.
They didn't decide to merge the games, they are replacing it.
If they had renamed it "wars of middle earth" or some other crap then yay, more variety, a wider specter, fantastic !
But nay, they are riding the dollar bills as usual....
I just started a custom Dol amroth army, and will be gutted if they ruin the game....

Subject: Re:The Hobbit - What impact will it have on LOTR?
Not massive. Simply put, they won't change the game at all except the era. Why?
1) They don't need to, I have no problems with the current system and I don't know anyone who does.
2) Money horse. The less GW put in, the more profit they will make, simple as.
May look at obtaining the dwarven troop with bilbo and gandalf but that's about it, I have enough LOTR for 4 armies and GW is too expensive for what it is now
definitely going to see it, though because of my friend's college hours, it'll be the day after release (friday evening) when I go, though I am planning on dressing up as a dwarf to see it, simply because I can.
as for GW rules, I don't think it'll be a whole lot different, rules-wise (at least I hope it won't be, anyway.)
Trondheim wrote:Draw more undesirebals into the game, and further plunge it down into the dark abyss infested with teenagers.
probably this, though at my club the current LotR scene consists of me, my best friend, another dude and the only staff member, so as long as the new influx aren't either idiots or whiny 12 year olds, I'm happy for it.
However, if we start seeing armor saves in LotR, I may weep...
This! God damn this!
agreed. I much prefer the LotR rules over any other games system (apart from shooting, which could do with a bit of a bump up IMO).
I really think there's two questions- what we think will happen, and what we hope will happen.

All I expect is a new 'expansion' book,
The game will stay the same,
They'll just release the models as part of the same game format,
You'll still be able to use your models, all your old gametypes, all your army lists, but if you want to use the 'new, shiny, better, funner stuff', your gonna have to fork out for yet another book,
As far as I'm aware, this game type needs more players in my area, and as long as I don't see the same lists, like I do now with evrey other player wanting to play the fellowship or the elves in every game except a few, I'll be happy.
Remember though, Most of the moria stuff will probably be remodelled/rereleased, because Goblins, Wargs, and Trolls are all getting redesigned in this film.
Not a bad thing, but I just like the look of the old Wargs and Trolls,
I like big deformed doggie, not just a big wolf ...
'The men flee before my soilders, my guns sound out death, your blood runs down your streets, your women and children scream as your riddled with rounds from out guns, Your skulls will gleam with red from the blood that gleams from the bone, I'm lord of war, and I will conquer !

Lot of naive posts here IMO so I'll provide a veteran's perspective.
The bad news for LOTR fans is that as soon as the Hobbit films and the minis come out, GW will have never heard of LOTR and will drop it quicker than a Texas Prostitute and her underwear! . Sad but true. Evidence? Wood elves, Bretonnians, lost and the damned, sisters etc etc

I can understand what you mean by this but I don't think this'll happen as the people who do play LOTR really like the current rules and don't want to see much if anyhting change so the market will still be there wheras with the armies you listed there was other armies to replace them more readily.

The thing with this is, how dose GW make more money off people tat already play the game if the don't chane something (well in there minds). Plus, GW has said tere about getting new people to buy there games, so what the LOTR players want dose not matter. It is what will sell to the next goup of kids, that matter.

I read in one of GW's recent leaflets or WD (I forget, might have been the christmas gift list booklet), there's a picture of the hobbit with "The Hobbit Strategy Battle Game."
Though I really hope it's similar to LotR, minus extra models and a few tweaks.

I'm not expecting that the game system will change since the current sourcebooks will work with the new system (according to rumours). I would hope that the range of minatures are still readily available although I have noticed that the LOTR gift guide has disappeared from GW's website.
I'm just excited to see what is released and what I can add to my Moria goblins. (I'm expecting a lot!!)

Wow Gee-dub go and change the best rule set you have made in recent times...
Terrain that is going to be in the box, will keep that board-like feel with some terrain to block LOS a la the pillars and waht not in Mines of Moria
Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Enjoy! And on orders over £80, if you PM me your order number I'll throw in November's white Dwarf for free (the one with all the chaos in).
EDIT: At time of typing (1am) due to a double order, I have ONE limited edition set left.

I really need to know if my Isengard force is even going to have a ruleset.
I'm also not happy with the name, as the old one was fine, as would be "Middle Earth Battles" or something along that line.
Love the White Council, can't stand the Hunter Orcs on the Wargs. (Neutral on the Wargs though)
I think this will almost be a separate entity mate, I can't see them making everything irrelevant, that is too stupid for GW, yes even them And you seriously can't diss them warg riders, not seen the old plastic ones? though I did like the old metal ones to be fair
Just got my greedy hands on the latest WD, and I was pleasently suprised. The new models actually look like what Goblins, Wargs and such should look. In fact I was so impresed that I may start a Goblin host just to have an exsuce for modeling/painting them

I can't wait for the film to come out. Hopefully the new game will generate more interest in lotr. Shame it is not as popular as the rest of the games.

Visited the GW today and from what I could pick up, minis won't be in till Wednesday to look at and the game system for the main part won't be changing, the same lotr system we know and love only thing he can see is the addition in rules for monsters and the like, extra rule to make them more than just big warriors which could be cool, we'll just have to wait and see......

I don't mind the models, just the posing's far too boring.
also, the lack of new models is because there isn't a whole lot in the first film, most of the new models are probably gonna come in in the second and third films, much like what happened in LotR.
