besides the fact that this is a codex which is supposed to cover many legions worth, the characters have been the same for too long now-they've been the same since 2nd ed. What do you guys think?

It'd have been nice, but Chaos does have what, 7 characters? Codex SM has 11 or 12 to be fair, but I think it's the same as Blood Angels and more than Nids and I believe Necrons. Definately more than DA or BT, and at least all of our characters have models!
What I wanted from the new codex was one character per Legion, but the Warpsmith is cool enough that I'm content.

It is good that the generic HQ choices can be kitted out reasonably widely to represent a number of the different legions/warbands/etc.

Blood Gorgons on the cover, not a single mention in the entire book. Now that's annoying. (Or maybe its because they're Reasonable Marines...).

Only 3, not counting forge world.
Im not sure about nids though I think generally all xeno except necrons have a giant lack of named ic.

I'm not a chaos player- i just think its a bit lame considering how long they've been the same, i'd like to see someone new. As for the new sets yeah fair enough but its the characters i was refering to and imo the old raptors looked better

The old ones looked like marines who'd spent too long in the warp. The new ones look like renegades.
It is true however that Chaos hasn't received a new named character in a while though, but I guess GW's considered that they've got enough seeing as they're not the poster boy army.

Codex space marines covers a handful of chapters character-wise, blood angels only 1 chapter(plus seth), the chaos codex is supposed to cover 9 legions. but its not so much how many they get its more that they are the same old characters- not very exciting after all these years

I was very disappointed by the lack of characters for IW, NL, WB, etc. And don't go telling me "oh but you have warpsmiths and dark apostles!" Yeah, like the Iron Warriors Legion would be lead by people from the totally separate Dark Mechanicus, and the Word Bearers chaplains that likely lead entire armies and splinter factions should all be elites choice chaplain power level.

Furious? No.
Curious why? Yes.
It clearly breaks with everything in 5th Edition. I just hope it's a one off and not a new design-direction, cause that would be rather unfortunate precisely because presumably upcoming books like Dark Angels or Tau have so few characters.
Codex Space Marines 5th Edition added no less than six new Characters: Captain Cato Sicarius, Master Scout Torras Telion, Tank Ace Anataro Chronus, Chapter Master Pedro Kantor, Captain Kor’sarro Khan and, last but not least, Vulkan He’stan, who was for years the most popular special character in the game.
Codex Imperial Guard 5th Edition added a full nine new Characters (while dropping Ibrahim Gaunt and the Last Chancers): Knight Commander Pask, Sergeant Lukas Bastonne, Colonal “Iron Hand” Straken, Guardsman “Sly” Marbo, Gunnery Sergeant Harker, Captain Al’rahem, Commander Kubrik Chenkov, Mogul Kamir, Nork Deddog. All new in the Codex.
Codex Space Wolves 5th Edition both revived Njal Stormcaller and Bjorn the Fell-handed, who had been missing in 3rd Edition, and added the original new characters of Arjac Rockfist, Lukas the Trickster and Canis Wolfborn.
Codex Tyranids 5th Edition took arguably the largest effort in giving “characters” to the army. Where 4th Edition Tyranids had no named characters at all (having omitted Old One Eye and the Red Terror), the 5th Edition Codex added Old One Eye back in. It also added the Doom of Malan’tai, the Deathleaper, the Parasite of Mortex and retconned the entire Hive War background for Warhammer 40K just to add the Swarmlord.
Codex Blood Angels 5th Edition added three entirely new characters: Astorath the Grim, The Sanguinor and Chapter Master Gabriel Seth. It also revived Sanguinary High Priest Corbulo, who had gone missing in the Blood Angels’ interim 4th Edition Codex and added a Death Company version of Captain Tycho.
Codex Dark Eldar 5th Edition added three characters: Lady Malys, Baron Sathonyx and Duke Sliscus, while dropping Archon Kruellagh the Vile from the cast.
Codex Grey Knights 5th Edition adopted Inquisitor Karmazov from the Witch Hunters. It also added six new characters: Lord Kaldor Draigo, Grand Master Mordrak, Castellan Crowe, Justicar Thawn and Inquisitor Valeria.
Codex Necrons 5th Edition was, of course, an incisive re-imagination of the Necrons as a whole. Dropping the old, named C’Tan and introducing Necrons with ‘character’ for the first time was a thorough change. The new cast are Imotekh the Stormlord, Illuminor Szeras, Orikan the Diviner, Trazyn the Infinite, Nemesor Zahndrekh, Vargard Obyrion and Anrakyr the Traveler.

I find this whole threat halarious simply because if Chaos Marines got any more 'new' SC's, they would probably end up dropping one or two of the current ones to make room.
Then you'd have hate-threads about how evil GW are for removing Special Character 'X' who's been around for ever and ever and replaced him with super broken/underpowered new Special Character 'Y'.

If you want special characters, go play Warmahordes (srs).
Personally I was surprised that there wasn't a lot of cool new wargear/equipment to give your Lords, which is the thing that bothers me the most. I prefer to make my own characters instead of using presets.

Frankly I feel sorry for the chaos players, It seems their new codex is just the same old stuff repackaged in a fantasy army book style i'm assuming will be the norm for 6th codex releases. Yeah they get new big units but what of the options for the actual marines. I don't even play chaos but after all these years even I am bored of the same old nurgle get +1T, slaanesh get +1I or whatever, if you want to field a renegade army based on just 1 god you simply do not get enough variance between units. Boring.

Sorry but if you've played/played against chaos space marines since 2nd ed you may feel differently. dropping and adding characters has been the norm for pretty much all the armies over the editions and is a good way of keeping things fresh. Apparently however this does not apply to chaos marines.

This is true.
Honestly, new characters was something that I was excited to see, but even without them I think I'm overall happy with the way the codex came out. I am hoping that some of these old sculpts are replaced though because some of them go way back. Why take old crappy pewter sculpts and turn them into plastic?

On the original question: Furious about a lack of new special characters? No. It added plenty of new units and the game doesn't need more special characters.
I liked the book over all, but little things disappointed me, such as the Axe of Blind Fury giving its wielder Rage, when it requires a mark of Khorne, which already grants Rage. That strikes me as sloppy.
for the record, al'rahem, chenkov, kamir and nork were all there in 2nd ed.
and i think marbo and straken were in codex: catachan. harker too, maybe, but im not 100% on him.

Straken and Marbo were both in Codex Catachans. Harker was not.

I've been playing CSM's on and off since 3rd edition.
In the 3rd ed codex we had; Abaddon, Ahriman, Kharn, Fabius, Cypher & Doomrider.
In the 3.5 codex we lost Cypher & Doomrider, (and people whined and moaned!), and we ended up with; Abaddon, Fabius, Kharn & Ahriman plus the NEW additions of Typhus & Lucius.
In the the 4th ed codex we kept Abaddon, Kharn, Ahriman, Fabius, Lucius & Typhus and gained Huron Blackheart.
Chaos doesn't get new SC's? Please try telling us another one since over the past 4 books, (including the new 6th ed codex), this is the first codex that hasn't added any new/returning SC's.

It got two new character types: the Chaplain and techmarine type characters. (My book is not hand and I can't recall their names) Neither character model was present in the previous codex.
You are probably talking about spaceial/named characters. I'm fine with no new ones. I'm not a fan of named characters in general for reasons I have stated before and would love to see a return to "use with opponent's consent only". It is nice to see that the generic lord and sorceror characters unlock cults as troops. I was going to be seriously irritated if the early rumors had been true and it was only special chaarcters that did that. Players should not be force to buy some illy special character model to unlock troops or enable a particular army build.

I was suggesting different characters should have been included not necessarily more if you read the initial text i wrote under the subject line I must have misunderstood then. Was your point that they should have replaced older characters, that people already own, with new ones? Was there a particular character from the fluff you had in mind to be introduced? Cypher and Doomrider were both banished from the Codex back in the 2nd 3E C: CSM, and Cypher couldn't even accurately be recreated as a chaos lord until this edition gave everyone the gunslinger rule, never mind Doomrider. Here's a more detailed response from my perspective: I'm against the proliferation of special characters. You can represent any number of characters using the generic HQ units without having to resort to yet another named Special Character with game altering rules. I'm glad the new C: CSM continues to allow alterations to the army list based on your generic HQ choice and his chosen mark, not only on named characters, which unfortunately is what GW seems to have drifted towards in many cases.
