I have been thinking about adding allies to my waaagh and was looking for suggestions. I like the idea of Tau Broadsides to fill in the obvious ork weakness against av14, but i dont like the idea of adding Tau to my army for purposes of fluff... They just dont seem to fit in. Chaos seems appealing. Any suggestions? Anything that would be a good compliment to a green tide type arm? I also run a bike/trukk/wagon (speedfreak like) army.

Use Vanquisher or Medusa bastion breacher. You can even make them as orkish. To guard these machines you can use ccs and veterans with autocannons as human mercenaries and put them altogether in aegis

CSM with a chaos landraider or something with Lascannons to pierce AV? and a few marines to beef up the shooting. I think fluff-wise chaos and orks both love blood and could work well together.

WAAAGH!!!

Guard work really well when you loot them.

Here is what I did:

HQ:
Command Squad:
-GW Plasma Guns
-Kromlech Orks in Great Cloak
-Kromlech Ork Commissar
-Other Bits

Elite:
Marbo
-Modified an Ork Nob, i.e. tankbusta bombs, etc.

TR:
Cadain Vets
-Box of Cadian troops
-3 Plasma guns
-Gretchin heads
--Consider Haker or a Chimera now

FA:
Vendetta
-Vendetta kit
-2 ork nobs (from the boys box) glued to the wings (to act as the other las cannons)
-half a pack of gretchin from the Stompa kit
-Exacto knife on the edges

HS:
Russ
-Russ kit
-Ork Nob in front with a gun for the hull mounted weapon (need exacto knife and some plastic card)
-2 Gretchin from the ork bomber maginitized inside the spontons. (I know they're not great, but it looks cool)
-Kromlech tank commander

Manicore
-Ork Trukk
-Plastic card over to cover the back
-Extra missles from the bomber set (I maginitized 4 on the top of the trukk to indicate how many shots are left)
-Kromlech tank commander
-Smokestacks from the Stompa set (one for the gun, one for a smoke stack in the back - chopped it in half)

Hopefully that gives you some ideas. Probably going to pick up two Chimeras and make a Hakar.

If fluff is your only argument for not taking Tau, loot the bastards.

Thanks for the input guys. @ cox.dan2: great idea throw that av 14 land raider back in the marines faces and i agree, CSM do seem to fit well fluff wise. @namelessbard: guard never seemed to fit into what i am doing army wise but converting them in to orks is brilliant, I'd love to see some pics of your finished work. @matphat: I have thought about lootin broadsides, it seems that CSM would be a lot easier to loot for my humble conversion abilities. Has any one seen any decent Tau/ork conversions? Maybe just a little inspiration is all I need.

Orks count-as guardsman? Maybe grots will be better?
Marbo
-Modified an Ork Nob, i.e. tankbusta bombs, etc.

Named characters cannot be taken as allies.

Are you sure about this? I don't think there are restrictions on taking named characters.

Freakazoitt has a point about the named characters allying. I didn't think about that at first. if i took the vanquisher or medusa, how many points of allies is a good ratio to use?

example:

ccs w AC - 60
vets w AC - 80
2 vanquisher or 2 medusa bbshells - 310 / 280
aegis line (given from Orks main detachment) - 50

total 470 - 500

plus, you can add plasmaguns for self-defence (but that's expencive)

They might be better in your mind, but the models are excellent. No one is going to complain about that and if do, they can play someone else. No one I'll ever play will complain about it.

I've read over the allies section and have not seen anywhere that discusses that named character cannot be used as allies. This may be some sort house rule that your group uses, but it does not appear to be in the rules. I may be wrong, however. Your short statement did not give me much further information to go on.

I've been running Necron allies for a bit with a LOT of success.

Running Speed Freaks, Wraiths + a Destroyer Lord is an excellent addition (Rending + Preferred Enemy + 3+ Invuln + Ignoring Difficult/Dangerous Terrain).

I've also used a C'tan (Gaze of Death + Pyreshards is 250 points) and though he's expensive, he tied up Logan Grimmar and a full Space Wolf squad (I don't remember the name) for 2 turns, halving the squad and dropping Grimmar to 1 wound before finally dying. My boyz shot the rest to pieces next turn.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It turns out a friend bought me a tau broadside as an early Christmas gift. I suppose it will work for now, although I was really leaning towards chaos space marines. Maybe in the future when finances are better I can start a chaos army and use them as allies until I get enough points to field an all chaos army. Until then it looks like "looted" tau. Any suggestions on what kind of H.Q. to take with the broad side, and should I take a second and/or another tau unit as support?

There is no such restriction on taking named characters as allies. That was a 6th ed rumor before it was released.
