GW seriously under-estimate peoples' willingness to pay for *decent content*.

Unnessesarily extravegant word of the week award goes to jcress410 for this:

I love a lot of the people in here slating WD haven't even bought it this month.

I for one love it, but then I have 2 whole pages of my models photographed by me in a global magazine bought by thousands.

Not being funny, but I think your perspective is a little biased

Regardless of the magazine quality, congrats on getting your minis published in WD. That's no small achievement

I'm always tempted to buy it, but glad I haven't. I agree with what's been said here. It's like a sleazy infomercial now.

Well, I'm off to buy my official Games Workshop Hobbit Paint Set, so I can paint my Games Workshop Hobbit Miniatures, and play a game of The Hobbit all by myself, cause I certainly don't hear anyone else wanting to play that.

I picked up last month's issue after flicking through the first 'new look' issue and being mildly intrigued, sat down to read it with my lunch and made it to the end without pausing on any page longer than a minute. After re-reading it, the only thing that seemed worth the time to read was the battle report.

I've never been a GW hater and up until last year when I realised I'd never have time to paint a 40K army again I still bought the odd tank or squad here and there, but if they just put enough content in there to make the mag worth reading rather than flicking through they'd have my money every month. If only they'd bring the citadel journal back :(

I like White Dwarf. Prior to going berzerk a couple months ago and throwing all my issues in a dumpster, I'd reread through the issues I had. As shallow as some (maybe all) of the battlereports were, it was fun reading about people playing. I didn't mind too much that it was more of a 'catalogue' rather than a 'magazine'. The more places I can see the merchandise the better... plus I actually dislike navigating the GW website (especially with the ancient browser at work). I recently bought an issue of White Dwarf and have yet to look through it. It sounds like it hasn't changed much, so I'll probably still enjoy it. Now if only they added more fluff stuff like short stories or background of certain units.

I love the people who come onto this massively popular site only to self promote and push some minor blog. Especially when they have to say something 'inciting' to get heard...

We've seen your advertisement now, thanks...

It's why I chose to become a DCM here, I realized just how much I get from the forum; battle reports, beautiful painted mini photos, tutorials, news and interesting debate and it updates every minute of any day. Given that GW wants $100 for 12 magazines that, despite recent promises and emperor's new clothes, contains little other than glossy photos and advertising, I find I am very happy to financially contribute to a website that gives my hobbying such a boon.

GW's management seems to 'not get' the hobby, fundamentally, if they think White Dwarf is anything like worth it's while to continue with in it's current format.

Actually, when you put it like that, it makes a lot of sense. No more white dwarf for me. Think I'll put some dosh into Dakka next time I'm flush instead.

Don't be pigheaded when you're trying to promote yourself dear. =P

Anyhow, I really do agree with MeanGreenStompa's point. Dakka provides much better content than any magazine, and allows for a much higher degree of user input. Hell the DCM program's cheaper than a White Dwarf subscription, and it really is a nice way of showing our support for the site. ^^

White dwarf is meh......my housemate buys it and I flick through it in five mins and pass it back. It's rubbish.......not like when I was a kid and you got blue prints to build a whirlwind or a vindicator from a rhino kit, not like the white dwarf that had fantasy role play marienburg campaign or a imperial guard epic army list you could cut out and stick together.....now THAT was a magazine

OK so I did a shameless plug... can you blame me... I was in fricking White Dwarf this month. I was first to be chosen for their new feature Reader's Parade Ground. Can you not see why I wouldn't want to promote something I'm so proud of?

Sad to see it is still the same, I miss the days of a new army or unit every month. Now its only worth picking up when new rules come out. That will only last until they have rules releases on the android, then I will just pick them up from the book store.

Or Ravage, which provides more interesting articles on GW stuff than WD does, go figure.

Then there's also 'Wargames, Soldiers & Strategies' and 'Miniature Wargames'. All provide actual gaming content

I've picked up Wargames Illustrated a few times but I only like sci-fi games so it's not really any good for me (not their problem, I know ), I pick up Miniature Wargames occasionally but again it's all historical with the token sci-fi section at the back that's just a run down of all the releases you've already seen in the past couple of months online. I did support the Darker Horizons test release and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that, as Miniature Wargames just comes across as a bit amateur at times (I have one issue that features huge pictures of some SWAT-style minis that look like they're sculpted out of playdoh and painted with emulsion :().

I've got a couple of issues of Tabletop Insider from Germany and the quality of that mag blows all the UK offerings (with the exception of Wargames Illustrated but again that's historical only) out of the water. Does the UK just not have enough people interested in sci-fi and fantasy to support a quality bit of toilet reading or should I just learn to read German?

Since I'm a few copies behind, Does GW let me pick old issues and buy the ones I've missed?
Nope.

You think that's an indication of their attitude to WD in general?
I've missed out on the SoB codex, the Stormtalon rules, etc.
So, all I could get now is a self-congratulatory catalogue, with previews of stuff they'll release the same month, and the same pictures I can see for free on their website.

I did buy the new paints edition, and the one with the original Finecast info.
If they want me to buy it, make it different to last month's.

Let me make my position clear. I freely admit, that over the years I have spent hundreds of pounds on GW products, and shock horror, have enjoyed myself when using these products in games of warhammer. I have no axe to grind against GW.

But when I come across a sub-standard product that treats it's customers with contempt, I say so. If the December WD had been any good, I would have said so. It may come as a surprise to some people, but there have been WD issues in the past that have been quite good.

I read your review, and I agree that Jeremy Vetock's wit is essential reading, well worth the money

I would also like to inform you that great looking minis are not exclusive to the pages of WD, and can be found on this site, and many others. For free.

I think 40K is so dominant in the SF genre that there isn't the chance for a professional magazine to survive on the myriad of much smaller competing games.

It is a pity they do not get more coverage in historical mags, but I suppose that historicals is already a very broad church and can satisfy many people's desires for variety without SF/Fantasy.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I'll probably be buying the two issues of WD when Black Templars get banished to a WD 'dex (if the rumor is true.) Beyond that... meh. Why bother? I'll pick up a copy when they release some useful rules because, really, they're pretty much twisting my arm pretty hard at that point. That's pretty much it. I like to get a sub to Game Informer for toilet reading because it's reasonably cheap and I occasionally buy/sell used video games. $20-25/yr for that is pretty reasonable, and occasionally I learn about a neat new game. WD tells me almost nothing I don't already know, and costs 4x as much. Pfft.

The best part of the issue was the poster - and they even messed that up as it is double sided so you can't show moth xenos and marines.

I've never heard of Tabletop Insider, I'll try and keep a look out for it. Most of the magazines here are predominantly historicals (which I still like to read because of the history even if I don't game. WI is great for that with it's battle layouts - "Here's what actually happened, here's how to recreate it").

Ravage does soley sci-fi/fantasy, but it's more skirmish game based, and from what I can tell as US magazine translated from Spanish, but it still a good read.

About half of it is nothing but images of new minis again, the very same stuff you see on their homepage.
