Imperial Guard were my first real army. I sold them to a buddy a couple years ago and recently negotiated swapping a Nid army for my old IG army. I have a Stormtroopers and was considering adding them to my list. They seem a little better than they used to be on paper, but I wanted to hear peoples real-world experience with 6th edition.

IMO, still overpriced, still wounding MEQ on 5's...
10 Vets with 3 plasma guns through out more hurt and are cheaper...

Re-roll deep strike or infiltrate makes them a very attractive melta delivery system, IMHO.

Very good.

Storm troopers arrive anywhere on the board with extra-accurate deepstriking, and get to attack whatever they want, from whatever angle they want. Usually for me this means meltaguns to rear armor in melta range. Kills vehicles dead, and in a hurry.

Furthermore, you get Ap3 weapons, which means that you are good against almost all infantry (and even some monstrous creatures) that's out in the open, which deepstriking practically guarantees you're going to get. Land over on the side of the squad with the sergeant or weapons upgrades, and you've now got a sniper unit as well.

Probably my most successful use of stormtroopers is in a squad of 10 with two flame throwers. Almost without fail, wherever they land, my opponent loses an objective. This has literally won me the game on more than one occasion.

Plus, with carapace, they have the penchant for actually surviving the first round of return fire, and the only thing better than meltagunning something from out of thin air is meltaing/krak grenading something the turn after. Likewise, as good as flamer stormies are at taking objectives, they're also not too shabby at holding them either.

I've had so much success with my stormtroopers in the past few months that I now routinely include 30 of them at 1500+ points. They're expensive, but they're worth every point.

There is one drawback, though, and that is that a stormy-heavy list generally takes big swings. Either they connect and just beat friggin face, or they whiff, and it's a pretty epic failure. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground.

As such, I'm starting to get in the mood of pruning some of my points from my stormies to put things that behave in a more consistent fashion. That said, I'm still bringing 3 squads of them, even if I'll not be running them in max sized squads...

In 6th they are quite a bit better than they used to be. This is simply because you can deep stike them to just the right position to kill important models in enemy units with only a couple of hits. The addition of line breaker means that dropping them deep in the enemy deployment zone and then making them survive gives you victory points.

Veterans don't get the deployment options or the pistol, which is nice if you need to assault. You really are paying for that scatter reroll (or whatever you use instead) and the AP3, which makes things cry sometimes. Wounding on 5s isn't so bad.

They're a surprisingly efficient unit at destroying armor when equipped with melta, but compared to vets who often fulfill a similar role they lose out in other ways, while still much more efficient, vets can score, put down more bodies, and add to armor saturation. I would take them depending on your list, I believe they'd do quite well in a foot list but perform poorly in a mechanized list.

I run a strong gunline but the next list I build I am going to throw in 2 or 3 squads of stormies. They will be effective at destroying enemy armor and they got a lil kick when it comes to fighting marines but not too great. They deffinitly have there place in lists.

Well with they way i run my Kasrkin things work out incredably well . what i do

10 man Squad - x2 Plasma guns 195 Points , Yes that price looks Extremely Steep but i will explain that in pros and cons ..

Pros - Their guns are AP 3 , They can Deep Strike , out flank and Infiltrate ( i wouldn't suggest this one ) and have Carapace ( i enjoy it plus makes models look Badass )

Cons - Cost , Limited Flexability after Deployment , and a nice Squishy ( in comparision ) to other 200 point units

Now with the idea of stormtroopers , They historically are ment to Assualt ( speaking real life not warhammer ) and Take a fortifacation or Posistion in the Advance of Allied Troops . That being Said , DONT EXPECT THEM TO BE MARINES ! You build them with a specific goal in mind , their job = Accomplish that Goal at all cost , My Build happens to be to kill Terminator HQ's and last Minute Objetive pushes as well as light Anti-Armor ( i deploy via Deep Strike ) Others make thier goal to be to clear and hold Objectives ASAP ,which is were the Flamers come in hand .

Main builds ( that i have used/ Seen )

TEQ , Assualt Troops (again real life not Warhammer ) 10 Troopers , x2 Plasma guns - air Assualt doctrine ( re--roll Deep Strike Scatter )

Armored Advance or rear action movments - 10 troopers ,x2 Flamers - Chimera - Using the Outlfank Doctrine ( can't remember the name ) as chimeras are Dedicated Transports

Tank boyz busting balls - 5 Man suicide Squad x2 Meltas - Deep Strike ( most common build )

Over all if you don't build them with a specific purpose they will be horrible , Building them with a purpose gives them Direction , and Somthing to kill .

In terms of cost i have some explaing which might Justify some of it , You are Paying for the Following

Carapace Armor - ( 30 Points on Vets )

AP3 rilfes even if they are S 3 ( had these save me a Game once , Butchered Grey knights )

Delevery system - Deep Strike , Infiltrate , Outflank - This i think is the Major reason that i enjoy Stormtroopers is they have Ways of Delivery that are MUCH cheaper then the alternatives

Example -

10 Stormtroopers x2 Plasma guns - 195 - Assume they are taking the Airassualt doctrine

( to aquire the same capabilitys )

Vet squad + carapace + 2 Plasma guns - 130
+ Valkyrie Gunship (STOCK ) 100 Points
230 ( + upgrades is up to 270 with MRP and a third Plasma gun )
So already you are at more then the Barter cost for stormtroopers
And with Grav Chute insertion you screw up your scatter and your done , THe Stormtroopers at least have a Chance of fixing that

Now even Better the Hot shot upgrades , making Stormtroopers Far more worth Their weight due to Delivery system

Yes i am aware of Mech builds , i personally take one if you couldn't guess by ,my SIG ,

And the Above maths is for Having EQUAL capabiliys , yes i'm aware that vets can excede it in some aspects .

Now to the part were Vets are Scoring and Stormtroopers are not , Stormies can Contest . but if you have Assualt Infantry holding an OBJ . then their is a problem , Offense is the key to victory . Their job is to find something and kill it , not pussy foot around in the back sections of the map .

Now many will disagree with what i've said above and you can choose to take it with fruit im just trying to throw a little Light on a Situation that people don't like to look at because of the cost .

i run 4 mech vets (2 plas 2 melta), plus 2 melta kitted full strength Stormtrooper squads in my Vendetta's, artillery and mechvets behind ADL (they are my Anvil) and stormie in my Vendetta's (they are my hammer) usually splits an aggressive player up.
he has to decide do i continue my advance or shore up my 6 (either way i usually come up winner winner chicken dinner)

stormtroopers are more expensive, but have a higher survivability plus dont "completley" suck at HTH.
they are much better at doing what they are supposed to do (destroy SPECIFIC targets) and look a lot cooler than your average Cadian.

i like them but i play a more elite type army build for my guard than simply bodies.

There are more drawbacks, really.

1) They're expensive. You're spending 100+ points on even the smallest useful unit, and full-size units are in the 150-200 point range depending on transport and weapon options. And with only T3/4+ they still die almost as fast as normal guardsmen, so you have to be careful not to spend too many points on your expensive glass cannons.

2) They have to start in reserve to do anything effective. Whether you're outflanking or deep striking you won't arrive until turn 2 at the earliest, and sitting out of the fight until turn 3-4 isn't exactly rare. This can be fine if all you have in reserve is a single suicide melta unit, but if you take multiple large units of storm trooper or flyers and other units that also have to start in reserve you'll find that the ratio of points on the table on turn 1 to points your opponent has on the table on turn 1 starts getting too far in your opponent's favor.

3) They aren't scoring units. While they can obviously do some things better than veterans (for example, deep strike suicide melta) you really have to ask yourself whether they have enough of an advantage over veterans in the melta/plasma delivery role to offset the fact that they can't claim objectives. Obviously it's fine to take non-scoring units if they give you a substantial increase in power in exchange (I doubt anyone will argue that you shouldn't take Vendettas because they aren't troops), but storm troopers are a lot closer to the "not better enough" line to make them an easy choice.

I don't understand why I see so many people putting the Storm Troopers in Vendettas.
You know they can deep strike without them right...

It gives you more control over when and where they arrive. If they just deep strike you get them when you roll a 3+, with no option to hold them back if you're not ready for them to come in yet. If you put them in a Vendetta you can keep them aboard the transport until you're ready to use them, and you also have the ability to drop into hover mode and disembark with no scatter. And of course you don't have to deploy them aboard the Vendetta just because you wrote your list with that in mind, if you want them in by deep strike you just declare it at deployment.

Or they could just be failing to read the codex carefully enough.

I used to think they were good (and still do to a point), but after running SW allies I've determined GHs in a pod fulfill the same role with much better capability.

Everything that makes the Stormies good also applies to the GHs:
They are both precision units (ST getting good scatters, GHs getting DP rule)
They can both carry two specials

The GHs give up Gets Hot AP3, but look at everything they gain:
T4, 3+ save
Better indirect Ld (ATSKNF)
Bolters and ccws, with counterattack, makes them tough to assault
Access to the wolf banner
And They are scoring!

To me, this is a good trade. Don't get me wrong, Min Stormies with meltas in a suicide drop has it's place (prefer Marbo for that but w/e), but if you're going to pay 200 points for a unit, I want it to still be there the following turn.

Ive thought about infiltating them but as they are stil so fragile I feel that if they dont kill what they need to then you are making it easier for your opponent to get first blood. For 500pts exactly you can get 2 vendettas, 2-x5man stormie squads with x2 melta guns each, and an astropath. Thats pretty much a guarantee x4 anti armor killing units or 2 anti armor and 2 anti air units turn 2 but as already noted that 500pts. Personally I would just deepstrike the stormies separate from the vendettas as I dont believe they need to be in there.

I've always thought stormtroopers were cool, though. Which is why I started buying the old plastic beret wearing ST's. And then couldn't stop. Based on those line drawings in the 3rd edition codex, I've started calling them my Kovnian 9 Elite Gharkas. I have a whole platoon worth of them.

Ive always read in the books the Imperium having companies of stormtroopers. It would be cool if you could have like a platoon of stormtroopers as an elite like you can have a platoon of guardsmen. Yet that would probably be very expensive and since its not scoring probably not used often.

Shoot then run and shoot again- even at another target if you wish, with even a -1 to your opponent's cover save.

being able to drop anywhere accurately and deliver 2 special weapons is awesome. And don't discount the fact they kill a MEQ better than just about everything other than special weapons. A maxed squad with 2 plasmas ought to kill 5 or 6 MEQs. That is not bad at all.
