Been looking at the game, thinking of picking up the US vs Zombies starter, but are there quickplay rules available or rules only stuff? Also what scale does the game play on (as in does it work skirmish based, or will i end up with 50+ models minimum playing something 40K scaled?)

Doc,
1st, disclaimer: I work for Grindhouse Games

2nd, new edition is immanent

Now, as to your questions: 1st edition does have quickstart rules for 1 of their squad level games (sniper):
http://westwindproductions.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=370.0

That being said, the squad level games are very much scenario specific (There are a total of 3 at the time I write this, one being Brainwurst which is the US vs Zombies set game). The rest of the missions and most of the games are platoon level, so 30 to 50 miniatures.

If you're looking for a skirmish game there's nothing preventing you from picking up the minis and then using a different ruleset. There are plenty out there that would allow you to represent the minis in the set right out of the box and a few more that would only take a bit of thought to make it work

Oh handy thanks for the reply btw, guess il wait awhile to pick up the rulebook till the next edition, as for "other games" the only weird war 2 games i found were this and dust which im not really sold on, and looking at it the minis for this arnt exactly expensive (look about £5 for 3-5 which is nice)

Well, and this is no way an endorsement for any other system and just a few off of the top of my head, you might look at:
AEWWII (They happen to be having a kickstarter right now!)
Disposable Heros: Point Blank (They don't have weird rules [yet] but I've seen fan based mods that did an excellent job of representing the supernatural)

There are others out there that are probably just a good as the two I mentioned. Just poke around a bit.

I really like SoTR and you should definitely try the sniper scenario (I ran a variant of it as an introduction for a mate of mine using a single wounded sniper on a rooftop - so he couldn't run away - with a ping controller and a horde of zombies vs a couple of allied fireteams.

Realistically it doesn't work that well for very small skirmishes because the lethality of even basic rifleman units is spectacularly high. If you find that everyone is dead very early on you aren't using enough terrain on the table. Most weapon ranges are effectively infinite so you need a lot of places to hide. Squads caught in the open die almost instantly. It took me a while to adjust from using 40k tactics, during which time I was losing entire squads in a single salvo due to not hiding behind something solid.

If you do get the full rulebook, try an all-armour vehicle battle. The army lists don't officially allow it but it's a lot of fun.

Ah fair enough, main draw away from the largescale games is usualy the price, but by the look of it the minis for this are really cheap.

Is there any idea when this "new" rulebook will be out, and will it just be a fixed errata version or basically a whole new game? Also i know the rules for tanks are generic meaning i could use any that scales to it, but does that go the same for the mechas or will i need the companys own for that?

This is all based on 1st ed:
main book you have 4 lists that are infantry platoon with support.

For all nations the minimum build is
1 command
1 regular squad

US: A lot of guys, retroengioneering alien tech (not widespread!)
Germany: A lot of firepower, supernatural forces (Werewolves and Vampires), high quality mecha
UK: British, access to a sizeable amount of (light) anti-tank
USSR: Low numbers, high firepower, camo (vs body armor that the other nations can get)

You also have an expansion book Doomsday.

Completely Revised doesn't mean completely rewritten.

Oh, both Germans and Soviets can take zombies
