Ummm...somewhere...

Wow ok...well I guess if its WYSIWYG then its fine...but probably not to be honest. I mean these guys are bigger than IG cadians, how are you going to explain the fact they have a 5+ save? Its not a very 'cool' count as either IMHO (no offence intended). Many people will just be confused as to why your doing it and working out whats what, which if it was a 'cool' count as people are willing to forgive that, but SM IG sounds really silly. If you don't like the IG models, there are plenty of 3rd party options. All together its up to your TO, but if I were you I wouldn't bother with it in the first place.

It would be a little confusing imo, trying to take in the battlefield at a glance and seeing a sea of Power armour, nah.

No. I have played against someone doing that and it hurt my head to remember that this squad of marines is the command squad and that one is a heavy weapons team.

Typically, proxied armies don't get to set foot in a tournament. If you are going for a "counts as" army, make it cool, like Blood Axe orks under the IG codex. Space Marine Imperial Guard? Wouldn't that be scouts without sniper rifles?

It wouldn't be WYSIWYG, because they'd have power armour, not flak armour. It could never be WYSIWYG.

All over

You can't do it UNLESS your playing a friendly game and your opponent says its ok. Me and my buddy used to proxy all the time. I feel you need to play before you pay.

The biggest issue here is the fact that Space Marine models are already used to represents another unit in the game.
Thus it can be somewhat confusing/annoying/non-cinematic to you opponent.

Every tournament organiser will take their own view.

IMO It is liable to confuse the other players and also spoils the idea of having distinctive factions to play with.

(I am less sensitive about size variations affecting play.)

If you want a variant IG army, you could use non-GW models and accept that they will not be allowed in GW tournaments.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Fairly sure GW doesn't do any tournaments in Australia.

It depends on execution, as with anything.

The difficulty here is that Space Marines are an established part of canon, and in canon are nothing like regular human beings ... not in size, statline, or feel.

Giving a space marine a lasgun makes him look like he pilfered it when his bolter ran out of ammo on a long deployment ... and while it would then make sense for him to be shooting a S3 rapid fire AP- weapon instead of his mass reactive shells ... it would NOT make sense that he suddenly had a T3 statline with a 5+ save and Ld7.

This isn't to say you couldn't do it, but the conversion and depth of execution required would be extreme ... you'd be much more able to get away with using one of the many, many third party miniatures out there if you wanted to represent "large" guard.

If what you're really trying to do is try Guard out while struggling with a limited budget (aka, you don't have the ability to guy buy a crud ton of guardsmen but you already have a crud ton of space marines) ... I think we can ALL empathize with the moments where that happens, but still have to answer that it honestly isn't an acceptable approach, due to the impact it has on your opponents. TO's have to do their best to respect all of their attendees, and that occasionally results in "for the greater good" judgment calls despite the empathy of understanding the high costs and challenges of participation in this hobby.

I'd have a huge problem with it.

If I'm in a tournament trying to get in 4 games in a timed-round event against people I just met, please don't make it 10 times harder with army modeling that's confusing.

Use IG or similar models (Mantics Corps or Pig Iron Games) for IG units and use Space Marine models for Space Marine units.

In a friendly game, I might be more lenient though.

I would not allow that in any of the tournaments that I run.

Well, that's two big TOs right there.

I would not want to play against it in a tournament. Counts-as should be simple and easy for your opponent. Space Marines as guard is neither without some crazy conversion work and even then, I doubt it would be.

Casual play? Sure. You can proxy bottlecaps for all I care.

I agree with Mike on this one unless you are putting in some significant effort to make the Space Marines less "Space Marinie" i don't think it would fly. Especially in 6th ed with allies as part of the game using one estabished races as counts as for another races is very dicey (are those space marines guardsman or space marine allies?)

This begs the question for me "why do you want to run Space marines as guardsman?"

If the answer is that you don't like the GW IG models (cadians or catachans) i would advise looking at other companies, or forge world, or even things like chaos cultists.

If the answer is that you have the marines and don't want to spend money, then I would say leave that to pick up/playtest games.

IF you just really like the marine models, maybe ask your self what it is you like about them and figure out if there is a conversion/model line that might reflect this without being exactly space marines.

No. I once lost a game in a tourney because I left a group of delve staters alone the whole game. Come to find out, the guy was using them as servitors with heavy bolters. I am an enforcer of WYSIWYG. I understand there are some items of wargeartat you won't see, however, power armor marines used as IG, no.

Why would you ever want to? IG minis are cheaper than marines. It wouldn't look any cooler, there'd just be a lot of them. If you want to play marines, play marines. If you want to play IG, buy IG minis. I don't understand the thinking behind this at all.

This sums it up for me.

Also this:

Power armor looks like power armor; which is not what IG have.

It would 100% work and remain WYSIWYG if you use space marine scouts with lasguns as storm troopers or grenadier vets.

Other than that the power armor in place of flack is a big no no.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.
