Newest 12/14/12 Update-
Newsletter releases tomorrow, has a TON of awesome information in it.
Look for a special holiday treat for readers.
Look for introductory information about a certain tour company that specializes in providing things for Geeks and their SO's.
Look for draft primers for WM/H, 40k GT/ Inv, Fantasy, Infinity, FOW
Ed Sloman of Games and Stuff, a major Magic tournament organizer, will be bringing several 200-300+ person PTQ events to NOVA this year, as well as drop-in draft tournaments all weekend long, and a series of 50-100 player events on the side.
Former posts:
Just a quick note here - we'll replace with a major event notification as we get closer to registration opening.
Speaking of which, registration this year will open on February 1 (a little later than usual), to let people focus a little more on other events in the interim, and to make sure ALL of our rules, missions, primers, etc., are out for all events prior to the first "purchase" being made.
That said, we'll be releasing draft primers for ALL of our events (including a much-revised 2nd year independent crystal brush qualifying appearance competition) within the next 2 weeks via blog, website, and newsletter. This is inclusive of major MTG PTQ events, Flames of War, Infinity, Warmachine/Hordes, Fantasy, and more.
The NOVA Open will be held from Thursday, August 29 - Sunday, September 1, 2013.
40k Draft Primer intro and guidance: http://whiskey40k.blogspot.com/2012/12/warhammer-40k-2013-gt-and-invitational.html
40k Draft Primer direct link: http://www.novaopen.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/NOVA-Draft-Primer-2013.pdf
The file will update regularly with corrections and edits to grammatical changes / unclear rules / etc. as caught by internal and external playtesting and critique.

No no - there'll be Heart of Gold. Sportsmanship is still in. We're just not including it in the Primer for the sake of the fact that this is primarily for mission testing and feedback.
You know, you're the second person to draw that conclusion. I'll have to amend the packet to reflect that as well, so as not to cause alarm!

Yeah, you should since it includes painting. If it only included the battle/overall prizes I wouldn't have sweated it Oh, and count me as a vote for all IA 40k Approved units being unique. I'm assuming that it would have to have the stamp, there-by removing the need to worry about characters. I'm in favor of this because it keeps some of the must includes and problem units to a minimum. No 4 sabre HWT's, 3 breaching drills, 3 units of elite IG artillery or things like that while allowing people to use their toys. Also provides anti-air units or flyers to armies that currently don't have them.

I like the change to the warlord trait selection, I like the way that worked out at BFS.
One interesting thing for you guys to consider off first glance is how you will have that work along with codex specific warlord traits. One roll for all the tables or would you have to declare you're rolling on your army's exclusive table?
Probably the latter is a fairer idea as army's who get a codex before then will basically have an extra chance of getting something they like versus older books.

With re: the warlord traits, will probably be either/or. I.E., you go with Codex traits, and roll once, or you go with book traits, and roll once, and use the d6 roll to select the matching trait.
It will depend in part also on what the status is on warlord traits and new codices by the NOVA itself (i.e., if FAQ's, WD releases, and codex releases yield a situation where most or all of the codices have their own warlord tables).

Is there a list somewhere of what IA units are 40k Approved? I have virtually no experience with forgeworld stuff so I'm not even sure where to look. I've heard that most FW stuff is not particularly game changing (or is actually underpowered for it's cost) so I'd prob be fine with them being useable as Unique choices, but I'd like to have a look at what actually is allowed.
I'm liking the change to quarters, though some clarification might be needed on what "actively claiming/denying" is (Do all units within 3" of an objective cease to count for quarters? Or can you decide whether each unit is claiming an objective or a quarter?). Also the expanded mission variety is a welcome change.
I'm not a huge fan of the standard objective placement. Maybe you could throw in one mission where there's the center objective and the other 4 are player placed.
Thanks for getting these posted so far ahead. Looking forward to testing these out over winter break.

regarding the warlord traits we have been doing in regards to armies that have codex traits is: choose 1 trait tree in the BRB to not use and then roll 1 d6 that would allow you to pick from 2 BRB traits and your Codex trait.

The answer to the warlord trait question would be for now to just roll d6 and pick from any tree (including codex), but that'll be subject to change. It will depend on what the other new codices look like by go time / final doc time. The alternative would be what Zeds (Ed M from BFS) just posted.
