Subject: Question on inking / shading over a bright orange / yellow color

Using Inks and Washes

I'm painting a hippogrif (if I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say that!) and the wings are a very bright orange and yellow - sorta blended but not really. I'd like to mute this a bit. I have two of the new bright GW shades (fuegan orange and casandora yellow), and their blackish shade nuln oil.
I was thinking I'd do a coat of non diluted yellow, let it dry, and follow it with a diluted 1-to-2 nuln oil to water mix. But I really don't know how to use those bright shades. What are they for, or how best can they be used? Should I apply the diluted nuln oil first, then the yellow? Should I dilute the yellow shade? I love the subtle shadows a diluted coat of nuln oil gives (and sometimes a non diluted coat, but I don't think non diluted would be good for such a bright color), and think that would look great on the feathered wings of the hippogrif, but I just don't quite know what effect the yellow would add. But I kinda wanna try it out...
What advice would you give the shade noob? What have you used the new orange and yellow shades for?

Yellow is a pain in the $#@! to get correct. What color have you primed the wings? If black then yellow is even harder to get correct .

All I can say about painting is that VMC tastes much better than VMA... especially black...

It was primed white, so the colors are particularly bright. Would you use both those washes (the yellow and the diluted nuln oil?)? Which would you use first?
Any suggestions would be most welcome. I'll post before-during-after pics if that would be helpful for the next guy who finds this thread, all panicked over painting his bright, hot pink space marines.

Wash the yellow parts with Casandora and the orange parts with Fuegan. If that's too dayglow, use diluted nuln oil and try to only drop it into the crevices rather than the entire model. It's always easier to go from bright to dark than vice-versa.

Yellow and orange glazes are just for evening out the color and make the transition between base and higlight more smooth.
For shading, go with a brown. Thin it down heavily for the first coat, and add more coats as needed. With experience, you'll be able to judge how thin to make it work in a single coat. When starting out, ovethin it and use multiple coats to avoid overshading.

Casandora Yellow and Fuegan Orange are the washes, not the glazes, I believe? Casandora is actually more of a deep yellow-orange and I believe Fuegan is a sharp brownish tone. Also, as he said, he has three washes and none of them are a brown.
I'd be careful about watering down washes too much, as the medium in them which allows them to pool in the crevices is equally thinned when you do this and it can lose that ability. Just be careful, though the GW washes can be a bit over-zealous, especially if you've had them for a while.

Thanks for the advice, it's much appreciated. I have an old ogryn flesh wash, and a devlan mud wash, so I'll try those guys first.
I think I want to wash it down with the yellow - mostly just to see what effect this will have on the colors than anything else!

Not a monster, but i'm currently painting an imperial fists army. Why i chose a yellow army i will never know, but....
The best wash i have used to shade them (so far) is Seraphim Sepia.
I also work off a black undercoat, base in (watered down) tau light ocre, then put (watered down) Yriel yellow over that, followed by the sepia wash, then highlight in Yriel yellow followed by a further highlight of flash gitz yellow.
The finish is nice and even, and although it takes time, its a very clean look

As I said yellow is really hard to get right. Tones of yellow on the other hand not so. Take a look at the link, those two are friends of mine that have an awesome mustard imperial fists army
