In the warp, searching for Marbo

Putting together the fluff of my army's world. In the past the world was a paradise planet filled with great planes, and at a point Xeno (necron I'm going with right now) invaded and through the course of the war (with only the PDF and Noble Private armies) the planet becomes a wasteland.

Lookin' for a plausible way for this to occur, and would be grateful for your suggestions.

You could go with the DKoK approach. Nuke fest causes serious damage.
But if youre going with necrons, you could say that the Imperium thought the world lost and sent out some orbital bombardments. The survivors are your army.

I would be inclined to move away from the DKoK method in order to make your army more different to them. Perhaps the Necron Crypteks employed some arcane technology that moved the planet closer to it's sun, scorching the surface?

I like it.

How about this: After a not so successful mission, half of a Ork Rok collides with the planet scorching most of the planets surface, and knocking it close enough towards the sun to the point where only the hardiest of plant/animal life can survive? While the majority of the inhabitants take cover in underground bunkers, and most nobility flee.

Any impact powerful to significantly alter the orbit of a planet is also going to be powerful enough to vaporise the entire surface of the planet anyway - however 40k has never been big on actual science anyway

Other options include:

- The Ecological collapse

Could simply be a natural phenomenon, or it can be caused by a bio-virus introduced at the bottom of the food chain - imagine killing all algae on Earth...

- The Nuclear Winter

This can also be caused by similar events such as a super-volcano or significant asteroid impacts

- Something goes wrong with the star

This is a fun one! Firstly you have the possiblity of a Helium flash event taking place - basically it sears the side of the planet's surface facing the star, and wrecks the overall atmosphere, while still leaving the possibility of life surviving on the other side.

Alternatively you could simply have the star move to a different point in the main sequence with subsequent effects on the biosphere.

Both of these would work very well with the Necrons - they could be using the star as a source of energy, causing these alterations but not caring what happens to the solar system.

- The massive radiation burst

Another fun one - a nearby stellar event irradiates half of the planet's surface, and destroy's the ozone layer. Could also be caused by a nearby Soft Gamma Repeater, Nova or Supernova

- For some other options take a look here...

That's why I suggested the Necron Crypteks do it, crazy arcane tech doing it makes more sense for 40K because there is no science behind it vs the impact idea since we do have some scientific understanding of how that might work

Excellent ideas, I shall do my best to get the best fit! Thanks all.

The population was stolen away by dark eldar. The poisoned the atmosphere and vegitation(just for fun ) and left the planet to die. A group of rebelious humans developed a slight immunity to the poison, and survived. These are you IG. You can fluff around the fact there would be no food or clean water.

"Archon Yulliptidon sat apon a throne made of polished glass, which gleamed with magnificence in the rays of the dying suns, beautifully suspended above the the many razor sharp peaks that where Commorragh. The archon held within his hands a a delicate pyramid of sculpted crystal, from which emitted a faint glow, an echo of the soundless screams of pain belonging to countless tortured souls forever trapped within. The room in which the archon sat in was something like a throne room, but displayed apon the walls where helm of every color, but all the same in size and shape. Some bore eagles on their foreheads, and others still contained the decapitated heads of their previous owners. Two huge, beautifully carved iron double doors, engraved with intricate runes of pain and suffering, opened at the far end of the room, to reveal a tall, elegant dark eldar warrior, clad in armor made from bone and flesh. "lord Yulliptidon, you asked for my presence?" Said the arrival, " to what do I owe the pleasure?". The archon raised his elongated head, skin as pale as a full moon, eyes as vivid as a horrible nightmare. " I did not ask for you, Thrayon, I ordered your presence. Do not think to much for your self, for truly, you are not much past a feral that one would find on the streets. As for why I have ordered you to my palace, it is because their is a task that I wish you to preform. I wish you and you kabal to cleanse the imperial out fort of Sargosain Gastienagan." Thrayon was both aghast and interested at what the archon had just said. "Such a task would stretch my kabal to its limits, only a great reward would be enough to do a deed like this." Yulliptidon was outraged by the the proposal of a "great reward" by Thrayon, but did not let his anger show, hiding it with a cold smile that hid his evil intentions surprisingly well. The archon was was famous for never telling a lie in his life, but was very fond of veiled double speak, and this was no exception. "Do not worry, Thrayon, you shall receive what you deserve." Thrayon, happy with this outcome, left to carry out Yulliptidons task. Little did he know what was coming. Thrayon had done a thousand evil deeds, and what he deserved was a horrible death equal to to all those he had caused. Yulliptidons smiled. He was going to have fun."
