I am planing to start infinity soon, and I have been going through forums and starting guides these last few days. I am in the glorious moment of placing the first order... but I have a question: Rulebook.

I would love to have a book where I could read fluff, check the rules and explore the different units to design my army. Can I find all that in “Infinity. Campaign: Paradiso" or do I need to buy the Rulebook or expansion rulebook as well?

Paradiso has a very limited overview of the major factions. There's a considerable amount of new info on ALEPH and on the Tohaa, the recently introduced faction.

If you indeed want fluff and unit overview, then both Human Sphere and the Rulebook provide those. Human Sphere is a better edited book, the basic Rulebook has many spelling, stylistic and editing errors.

Think of Campaignaradiso as a supplement to the 2 basic books.

Thanks.

Are the rules in the Human Sphere book? If so I think I will buy that one to start with, and I will print the "unofficial rules" to check during the game.

The main bulk of the rules are (oddly enough ) in the rulebook. This also contains the biggest single collection of units/equipment/skills etc. and most of the 'overview' background.

The Human Sphere expansion book added extra units, background, rules, the ALEPH faction and sub-factions for the existing ones.

Campaign: Paradiso added a few extra units, rules and the Tohaa faction but the bulk of the book is the campaign system and missions.

The main rulebook should deffinately be more of a priority than any other book. If anyone has a tablet (or notebook/laptop etc) that can also be useful as the wiki can give some better answers than the book can. That way if the book is unclear, just click the wiki link and read the FAQ.

If it's just for fluff... then you can really choose any book you like. The rulebook itself will have more of the foundation to the stories, so probably best to read that first anyway.

So, to get all the rules and check the different units, I need 3 x £30 books... I will start with the starter set and with the quick start rules.

That's really not that bad. 40k for example, the main rule book, the codex for your army, and the crusade of fire book is like 165 USD and that only gives you the rules for your army. in Infinity those same books are less than 150 USD and give you every rule for everyone.

Last thing I want to do is to defend GW but mini-rulebook comes with starter set or can be bought on ebay for about £15, and the codex is £20. I have never played a campaign (and I will never do as I am leaving GW).

I acknowledge that the rules for infinity are available for download. I've been just checking and I can have them printed and bonded for £6.

I was hoping I could get everything in a single book. Dreamer.

Kind of like the others have said, if you wanted the fluff you would have to buy all those books for both games. The infinity books are cheaper and give you all the fluff for all armies not just your own.

If it's just pure rules you want, IMO

Free rules wiki > mini rulebook
Free army builder > codex

But that's just me.

There is Some fluff for specific units on the website but not overall fluff for an army. But only units that have a figure out.

If you are looking at printing the pdf rules there is a pdf that combines the main rulebook and Human Sphere rules (fireteams etc) into one file. You can download it here Its the rules re-edit file. The only thing you'll be missing then is the new stuff in Paradiso.

No to get all the rules and unit, you need the internet, as CB gives it away for free online.

To get the fluff you need the book.

The rules and units that are online aren't "unoffical rules", hell the first to are basical scans of the rules form the books.

Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.
Man #1: Bob, there's nothing you can do.
Bob: Well, I guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor.

Download the rules (all of the rules ARE free).
Download the army lists (again - free - Tohaa aren't up yet, nor many of the newer units).

BUY the books when you want the fluff.
If you want to know the fluff, surely one of your mates plays. Borrow and read his. THEN buy your own.
(It's how the game grew in my area. One person showed the book to another, he read it and downloaded the rules, then bought his own, and told others about it).
