Many people are.

But many people are also achievement goons who have a number of friends who play the games and thus get roped in.

The 'casual' gamer has a very finite memory when it comes to things like this. Black Ops 2 is basically Black Ops with bells on, but the target audience (20-25 year old single blokes), don't really care. If the game is backed by a solid ad campaign then people have a habit of becoming sheeple. It's no surprise it made a that much money at all. If you chuck in company's like 'Game' doing crazy trade in offers as well......

You had me until you used the word sheeple. God I hate that word.

That aside I get the whole "all my friends have it so i'll just get it angle" especially seeing as that worked for me with MW2. But I guess it's all anecdotal but everyone I know that was a COD player quit. Everybody got sick of not only ponying up 60 for the game, but then another 60 in DLC. Again anecdotal, but I just thought games like that were on the decrease.

At least decreasing enough to not be the greatest selling game of all time in that time frame (I'm assuming here)

I guess after reading this article do you guys think were going to start seeing fewer total releases, with the emphasis on a few big names? Like the big name companies are gonna wrap up more and more of their capital in just a few big selling titles? I surely hope not.

Or, you know, maybe it's a fun and well made game like (most of) the rest of the series was.

And we have seriously used the word sheeple? Oh my stars and garters.

I don't think so. It was kind of a slow year, wasn't it? I bet that now that the WiiU is up and running Nintendo will start dropping some flagship games and sales will rise.

Just because a game is slightly altered from the original doesn't mean it's a bad game. And quite frankly, if people enjoy it, then who cares?

I don't like Call OF Duty, but only because I'm not a huge fan of Realistic Shooters. Or Realistic games period.

COD is realistic?

Not being a Nintendo player I don't see how the WiiU is really going to spark life into the field, but then again I don't really know.

As realistic as BF3 and Medal of Honor.
In other words, not really, unless you interpret realistic as "dull and uninteresting"

Well at least in BattleField there is some semblance of tactics. COD is running around till you see someone and then its whoever has the fastest reflexes. And years of lifestyle choices lead me to always lose those encounters. Hence why I hate COD ha.

I get the sense you don't actually use Steam or track piracy trends at all.
He doesn't; he's just blindly and ineptly trying to start another stupid console war argument, and we don't need that.

Hasn't been a single realistic shooter released yet.

To pre-empt anyone who claims otherwise-- no, that one isn't realistic either. You just happen to like its playstyle more. It's still not realistic. Hell, even the military's own simulator games aren't 'realsitic'-- they're not meant to be. They're meant to assist in training unit tactics and as teamwork exercises, not as a substitute for reality.

We only have a number for money made as of the article in OP (don't know if we have units sold yet).

The collectors edition for the game is $234.99 and people do buy that stuff.

As for me, I think the article is exaggerating things for the sake of sensationalism-- gotta grab dem readaz!. Yeah, the video game industry is going to be hit by a recession like most everyone else, but they've still been growing remarkably well considering the state of the economy.

Well, to be fair, the environment in S.T.A.L.K.E.R is pretty realistic and immersive.

That said, you can heal wounds instantly with med-kits and bandages, you never get sick, vodka is a bonafied cure for radiation poisoning, you never need to sleep, food never spoils and bullets magically place themselves in magazines for you.

Must be those crazy zone shenanigans.

Even the environment of the STALKER series isn't really very realistic. The player suffers a very limited field of movement in the environment, and enemy AI is stupid and dumb and also stupidumb anyway (it's either broken easy or broken hard, in very unbelievable ways).

I meant in terms of weather. Like the rain effects, and the general feeling of "you are alone, and you will die"
Its even better with Complete.

Pfeh, it didn't do that anywhere near as well as Penumbra, or any other number of horror games that aren't resident evil clones.
