Why after the Heresy did the Alpha Legion still side with Chaos not that they would have been welcomed back in with open arms but why the active hostility.

Is the Cabal merely a front for the Chaos Powers, because it sure seems like that to me, when they appeared before Alpharius Omegon in Legion it sounded like a who's who of chaos critters.

Is the Alpha legion at face value helping the powers of chaos only to find the most opportune time to strike, and perhaps regain favor? So far the prophesy is still on course, though the Alpha Legion siding with Horus should have ensured victory for Horus, so that should have planted doubt in the mind of Alpharius or Omegon(whichever one took over at that git Guilliman killed one of them). Also it said that most of the Alpha legion had not fully went over to chaos resulting in no mutation for the legion. You could almost run the Alpha Legion out of the main Space Marine Codex.

Starting a Legion soon, if it wasn't for the purple armour I might consider going that route.

I don't know if this has all been brought up but I would like your thoughts.

Personally I have never read the book but I know from other sources that the Alpha legion had good intentions but the fortelling was wrong to a degree. Its believed that alpha legion may still be loyal but I question that because they start chaos cults, attack valuable imperial assets and stole primarch genes from the raven guard.

Yea the whole Chaos cult thing is so bass akwards. If they don't chill in the Eye of Terror and partake of all the goodies why start chaos cults. I would rather they just be survivalists waiting for the best moment to strike. Maybe as Abbadon is nearing Terra on one of his many Black Crusades Omegon cuts his stinkin head off.

I believe the big thing is that while the Cabal's Prescience is powerful, its not perfect, and even with them convincing the Alpha Legion to side with Horus it was not enough to prevent the Emperor from being victorious. I may be wrong about this, but from what I've picked up the Tyranids were outside of the calculations of the Cabal, possibly because of the shadow in the warp effect, which may have twisted the accuracy of the prophecy. As for their current actions, don't forget that their goal was for Chaos to wipe out humanity, which will in turn deny the Gods their primary source of 'food', starving them out, so continuing to side with Chaos could be argued as an attempt to still bring about the ultimate end of the prophecy. Alternatively, giving the corrupting nature of chaos, it IS possible that over time all or at least parts of the legion (which is scattered now to a degree) have succumbed to the influence of chaos, no longer seeking to undermine it from within but instead acting as loyal servants.

The Beach

The Alpha Legion's fluff has made less and less sense as time has gone on.

Which is really a shame, as back when the 2nd edition Chaos Codex came out and started to expand the fluff on the Legions, they were originally one of my favorites.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?
