In the D20 modern roleplaying game, there are rules for Mecha. That is, if you're into tabletop roleplaying. We use 1/144 kits for that.

Man, I'd love for this to be a reality. I'd definitely play something like this. Although, now I'm sad I ditched most of my 1/144 scale models.

lol the above poster's avatar sums up Char pretty well I think. That's why I love the guy.

+1 for the Kampfer. That suit was ridiculous before the series itself went way OTT(like anything current really.)

I don't actually have that many 1/144 scale guys. I have a few 1/100s though, way to big for any sort of tabletop game. I'd be all in for a Gundam tabletop game though.

Someone once told me this about Porsche Panameras:
"There are two Panamera's in my hood. Visual pepper spray. When Jesus was on the cross and cried out "Father, why have you forsaken me?" it wasn't because of the whole crucifixion, it was because he foresaw the design of the Porsche Panamera."
You learn something new everyday.

One confusing thing may be how to handle all the possible different MS models. For most it isn't an issue, but some of the grunts (read: Zaku II) have a huge number of variations. Additionally, a lot of the weapons are usable by a variety of suits.

Thinking about list-building possiblities, let's say, for example, you were building a 3-man Zaku II team (as 3 seems to be the standard number).

So, the MS-06F would likely be the standard. However, the entire team could then be changed to a more or even less advanced model of Zaku. (For simplicity's sake the Zaku I may just be a downgrade for the Zaku II.) For a price the squad leader can get a commander's S-type suit.

For weapons perhaps there could be a few categories.
-The standard weapons the suit comes with (machine gun, heat hawk, cracker grenade).
-Special weapons that don't cost very much to pick up (Zaku bazooka, leg missile pods, magella top cannon).
-Compatible weapons from other mobile suits that you have to pay a premium to use (like a Dom's giant bazooka, or looted EFSF weaponry).
-Special/experimental weapons that are expensive and/or limited in quantity (back-mounted canons, minelayer, etc)

Of course, this is if a high degree of customization is what people want. You could easily limit it to standard Zakus with semi-standard gear.

Well, a Zaku wouldn't be able to use some things, like a beam rifle, so you'd need some hard restrictions in place.

True. For simplicity's sake, the list of available weapons would have to be streamlined, and limited. Maybe a list of weapons (almost) any Zaku-based suit could take, and make advanced weapons available only by choosing advanced suits such as the R-1.

If you have a game where each player is only going to have three models on the table anyway, you're given a bit of leeway with the complexity of each model's equipment. Considering the depth of the UC world, there's nothing wrong with expressing that all on the table, so long as it's all concise and well thought out.
