Today this came up in a game and I was wondering if it was legal. I had a destroyer lord and 6 wraiths. They were charged by 30 boys including a nob with power claw. After the charge the nob was 5 inches away from the closest wraith. He didn't challenge and said I couldn't challenge the nob either, because he technically wasn't in the combat at this point. Then on the nob's initiative step (1) he could pile in 3 inches and still be in the close combat due to being 2 inches from a model who was in base with the wraith.

Is this a legal and viable tactic to keep your characters from being challenged and then they pile in and get to attack?

In the end it really didn't matter because The Lord and wraiths wiped out the boys.

Thanks

This is a legal tactic.

Both characters must be engaged with enemy models to take part in challenges. Probably done to prevent challenges from bringing characters into a combat they would not normally be able to take part in, ie over five inches away from the front line. It also allows your characters at least a single round to strike at the enemy unit before being singled out.

ADD causes my posts to ramble from time to time. Please bear with me.

You're not a Time Lord stick with linear time.

You cannot be challenged if you are not engaged in close combat at the start of the fight sub phase. This does not, in any way, you cannot come into being engaged during combat and therefore get to fight

"mean you cannot come into being engaged" - as in nothing disallows you from becoming "engaged" during the combat init steps.

Yup, it is missing a word. Green is what I think he meant to write.
