I was looking at the hobbit as a way of getting a dwarf force to play the full game. Am I correct in thinking that the hobbit box starter set doesn't have any point values in the small book? So I will not only have to buy the brb big rule book but probably a truck lad of minis to get enough to start the game?

I was waiting for the new edition to be released so I could start the game. I feel a bit cheated by the marketing of this ame..

Would I better buying the brb and sourcing an army secondhand?

Can the hobbit starter box make a decent army to use in the full game?

Thoughts please?

You can pick the dwarfs up off ebay for £15 then get the book and go from there

The Hobbit set wouldn't make a good starter army (at least not for Dwarves), as it is an army of heroes, with no rank-and-file troopers.

I agree with Dr. What, I would aim to have more warriors than heroes, unless you plan on mostly doing Hobbit scenarios.

So that brings you to a couple options. You can wait for the new Grim Hammer and Erebor dwarves who are pretty good and cool, or you can start today with dwarf warriors, who you can use as is or convert into iron guard and khazad guard. Either way I would stick to using plastic models as much as possible to save money.

Ebay would be the best as usual for these. So then that brings you to rules, which will be the hardest thing to do.

So basically if you get the hobbit book you will need to definitely buy the Free Peoples army book. If you just wanted to get started with a couple friends however it might be best to just hunt down a cheap version of the old rulebook and use that until you can justify spending more. The old one rulebook has profiles for many models from the Lotr period so lots of people could share it.

If I were you though, I would just wait until the plastic dwarves come out. I agree with you, this is a pretty bad time to actually get into them and ebay prices will still be high for a while.

Thanks for the thoughts. Dwarfs it is then.
