Ok so I have this dilemma and need some advice, sorry if this is the wrong subforum but tournament rules/modelling for advantage are an element of this question.

A friend gave me a model as a gift for my birthday, it's an HQ model that normally comes on a 25mm base. However, he mounted it a beautiful custom 40mm base that he made from scratch. So far I've played in a fairly small 40k circle and while one or two people have pointed out that it isn't standard no one has had a problem with it.

My worry is that I want to play in tournaments and I'm concerned that the model will be banned, as modelling for advantage. On the other hand I really hate to rip it off it's base and redo it. Worse I've been procrastinating on painting the model because of this dilemma.

So dakkadakka, what would you do?

Ask the tournament organisation, the only way to be sure.

But usually if it looks good/cool, noone will care. Bigger bases usually have only disadvantages though.

Leave it. Just don't take any advantages from it.

Due to the change from 5th to 6th, oversized infantry and character bases are much less impact than before. You can't gain extra movement like you could in 5th. It is also much less significant when it is 1 character vs a whole unit like deepstriking 25mm termies.

Larger bases are almost always 'rule of cool' followed by 'play it as the standard base size'. It is easy enough to visualize how things COULD hit it should it be larger/smaller base or higher/lower LOS.

Getting a larger base for a model is almost always a severe disadvantage.

In 5th it increased assault distance out of transports and was a real, game-impacting advantage.

In 6th, When trying to avoid challenges, having a larger base at the back of a unit can make it easier to avoid being engaged at the start of combat and then slink in towards the end. While the tactic can be done with smaller bases, larger bases tend to have a harder time navigating in assaults.

With OOP models and such, there are models which should be on 40mm for modern models which get a large advantage by being on 25mm.

There are ways to 'take advantage' of different base sizes, as long as you don't try to, it should be fine.
