Hey all.
Just got wondering as I am not quite sure on this, but, if I was to purchase the 'A brace of Ogre pistols' weapon option for my Tyrant, could I then use the points available for my magic items/big names to purchase a magic weapon that is used in melee? In essence, can I buy the pistols then buy a magic weapon and be able to use the two?

Much appreciated,
crimson

No, from page 501 of the main rules.

oh well. Thanks for that kirsanth. It's unfortunate as I was really hoping to have the pistols and a magic weapon (thought the pistols would count for ranged but I have just read that they count as hand weapons) but I guess I'll have to do without. Might have to model guns onto the spines of blades or something then to represent the hand weapon thing. As I said, thanks anyway kirsanth.

Happy to help; not so happy it was with bad news.

No, you can use the pistols as a ranged attack, just not as an additional hand weapon (if you buy a magic weapon).
Plus, no need to model blades (unless you want to), remember they would simply hold the barrel and beat things with the (rather solid) stock

Hmm yeh. I just happen to love the Golgfag model and (with the help of converting) didn't want to have to remove that sword of his, 'tis rather preety I must add.

Just to clarify.

Yes, you can buy a magic weapon and a Brace of Pistols together.

However, the rules will force you to use the magic weapon in melee. So you will only have the pistols for ranged attacks, which is wasting half the bonus of the pistols.

But Tyrants are lame anyway so it won't matter much in the long run.

Okay, yeh. I simply fancied the Initiative 10 offered up by the Fencer's Blades and then the opportunity for a bit of ranged in his attacks.

I didn't think they were all that useless though. I heard there are better stuff you can get for your points but I didn't think they were bad.

In a way, they are bad.

Because you can't take a lvl4 and a Tyrant(at least not witout sacrificing much of their equipment options) you are giving up a Lvl4 wizard, magic, and an Arcane item slot.

Thats a very large opprotunity cost associated with the Tyrant.

The Tyrant only gives Ld9 to the army, plus he's a slightly above average fighter.

The Slaughtermaster gives -1 Ld, but he can be almost as good as a Tyrant at fighting, he gives you magic buffs that benifit the entire army(4+ regen, +1T, +1Str, stubborn, etc...), and he can carry the HH or a Dispel Scroll.

If you want a fighty character, a Bruiser is a much better value for his points and can do almost the exact job of a tyrant.

Ah that is why there is much preference for a Slaughtermaster then. I didn't realise the differences were quite so stark and major.

I simply wanted a Tyrant to symbolise my Tribe's, well, Tyrant. I might not play him all the time if there really is that large a difference but I will occasionally and in bigger games.

Above 3000 pts the Tyrant becomes a viable thing to take, but because you can also take a Slaughtermaster at the same time. Without also taking less of other things.

Magic also doesn't scale well beyond 3000 because you can only ever have 12 Power Dice. Which means that once you have 3-4 Wizards you really can't get any more benifit out of taking more Wizards.

Well how things are going I'm aiming on that. I should have in the region of 200+ euros to spend just after Christmass. Then I'll have money to spend in the summer of that year when I return to England (Birmingham precisely) for the entire summer. I am hoping on amassing a fair army and seeing how they can be expensive on the points that will be easy without the Great Maw having to swallow my wallet whole.

For your purchases, I would reccomend 2 Battalions, 2 boxes of Mournfangs, 2 Ironblasters, a pack of Sabretusks, and a Slaughtermaster.

Take 2 of the Leadbeltcher bodies and use the tons of extra bits you get to make a Bruiser BSB and a Butcher.

This will easily get you a 2500 point army.

I was thinking along those lines, definitely the 2 Battalions though. I was doing some stuff last night and found that a single Battalion on it's own can easily match 800pts worth of models. I have also found an independant retailer located in Dublin who not only sells his products cheaper than GW, but can also post them too me and still have it cheaper than the GW product in euros alone. For example, I ordered the Ogre Kingdoms book on Monday evening. It cost 32 euros to buy and post, 35 from GW without postage. It then happened to arrive the morning after. Absolutely stunning and crystal service, such a lovely bunch. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll definitely go by that.
